Just a general question...Has anyone ever seen or heard of a All Wheel Drive Dakota with selectable 4x4?

I have a 2003 Dakota SLT-Plus Extended Cab. On my 4x4 switch/knob i have AWD, 4H, and 4L. I was just wondering if anyone has ever heard of this or might even have an AWD Dakota with 4x4...

I don't have any problems, but I was just wondering if this is a common drivetrain, or special order, or even rare...I just don't know....Thanks for any input!

Not rare. Factory option. Lots of Daks have it.
Read the owner's manual.

Don't listen to A-holes making fun of people asking a valid question.

As for rarity, I'm not sure that "rare" is the right word, but I know its not common at all. Not many daks have it.

All it is is a different transfer case that under almost all normal driving conditions (in AWD) it puts all the torque to the rear axle. However, if the rear driveshaft begins turning faster than the front, a differential will begin to build pressure and add torque to the front until the two driveshafts are turning the same speed. This allows the system to be driven on road without binding and eventually breaking sh!t. In 4HI, the transfer case locks the two driveshafts together like any other part-time 4WD system and is only used off road.

FWIW I think its the same transfer case as used in the Jeep Quadra-Drive's or Quadra-Trac's system. Theres a good write up of these systems on wikipedia. I think these systems incorporate Vari-Lok or Trac-Lok (or something-like-that) differentials in the axles.

It's a neat system and I've considered swapping my T-case for the one you have.

So to MIlton - I am about to buy a 2003 AWD model, I can swap cases and turn it into a regular 2HI/4HI/4LO?
