I have an 05 Dakota Quad Cab V8 4x4. I have a fog and coolant smell coming from the vents, but no leak on the floor. I even lifted up the carpet and check. Dry as a bone. The truck isn't using antifreeze and there isn't a leak under the engine. Anybody have any thought or know of a recall or TSB. I see that lots of Dak owners have had heater core problems but noticed that most occure on the Gen II models. I have talked to the dealer about it once and as it turns out my 8 yr / 80,000 Certified Warranty doesn't cover this.

It is your heater core. This happened on my 1999 model, no visible signs of coolant in the cab, but I could smell it through the vents. As it turns out, it was the heater core and it doesn't take much coolant at all for one to smell it in an enclosed space such as the cab of a Dakota.

How many miles do you have? That is really pitiful if it is low miles.

I know some have stated that at the factory heater cores were typically damaged during the install process.

Thanks. I figured it was the heater core, just hoping it would be something less expensive to fix.

The truck only has 66,000 on it. I was going to do it myself, but after reading about all of the problems on the Gen II Dak's heater core I decided to let the dealer fix it so it is has a warranty for at least a little bit.

It goes in this afternoon and I should have it back on Thursday sometime. On a bright note, the dealer where I bought it has agreed to split the cost of repair with me. I complained about the fact that I haven't had the truck only three months, and it is supposed to be a certified used vechile. Not to exact result I was hoping for, but it beats me having to pay the $800 to fix it.
