Subject: transmission won't shift IP: Logged
Message: I changed my tranny fluid and changed the filters. I put ATF+4 fluid in and drive it several miles, turned the engine on and off at several stops and drove home. I rechecked the fluid and topped off with an additional 1/2 quart. When I went to drive again it would not shift into drive or reverse and I read engine code P1732. Any ideas? Oh, it's a 4.7 with the 45RFE tranny.

Researching.
More info to follow.
Meanwhile, something you could try:
Start the engine, run the shifter through all gear positions, stopping in each one for a couple seconds. This should clear most of the trapped air.
Leave the engine running, make sure your parking brake is set real good, and check fluid level with transmission in NEUTRAL.

Message: Also the transmission should be hot (IE drive 10 miles) and parked on a level surface while checking the ATF level. My 45RFE dipstick had cold and hot markings, though the hot marking is the one that's really accurate.
How does the ATF level read with the transmission cold? Some of the 45RFE's had a lead-down issue that would give false readings if the truck sat for a day, my 00 4.7/45RFE did it. Bone cold it would read high 2-3", but after driving a bit it would read normal. You should have replaced about 6 quarts of ATF, maybe a bit more of less.
If the ATF level is correct and you didn't have problems before changing the fluid I would suspect something went wrong during the fluid change. Did the seal come off with the sump filter or did you pull it out of the transmissions pump housing? If it's still in there you might have 2 seals on the sump filter, 1 old, 1 new,,, this will cause problems. If this is the problem there's only 1 way to fix it, drop the pan again and get the extra sump filter seal out of the pump housing.

Message: I checked the seals when i put the filters in. The new spin on filter seemed like it has a lot thicker seal on it. I bought the filters and fluid at Advanced auto parts, maybe thats the problem. I put 5 1/2 quarts in it and checked it after I had driven it it for several miles and while it was hot. That's when I added the last 1/2 quart and right after that is when it wouldn't go into drive or reverse. When I first started to drive it after the fluid and filter change it wouldn't go until the RPMs were up a bit and then it seemed to slip, but after driving a little it got better. I thought it might be a little air.

Message: push in clutch and shift to the next gear that you need. It is not rocket science. Maybe you should just switch and start riding a single speed bicycle.

Message: From my experiences, the problem may be with your brand. Often we try to save some bucks by buying aftermarket parts, but it pays in the long-run with Mopar trannys to use only Mopar fluid and Mopar filters.
I have learned that the hard way. Oh, and did you flush the tranny? Should have.

Message: Chase, did you ever figure out how to resolve this issue? I am having a similar problem. Changed fluid and filters and now it won't shift into any gear. Just sits there. I used Autozone filters and ATF+4.

Message: When I dropped the pan I found that the filter tube had fallen out.
The aftermarket filter was a little different and didn't fit as well. I
repositioned it and made sure it was good and tight. I haven't had
any more problems.
