Subject: CatConv.vs.Test Pipe IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 5.9 4X4 with a cat converter rattle. Just wondering if anyone here has removed cat and placed a "test pipe" in its place with good results. I know there's an O2 sensor before and after the cat. With a straight thru pipe, will it give a check engine code? Thanks in advance.

It will if everything's working the way it's supposed to. The post cat O2 sensor is supposed to detect when the cat isn't working properly, so if there's no difference in the readings between the pre-cat sensor and the post-cat sensor (which is the case when using a test pipe or if the cat isn't working anymore), the Check Engine light should illuminate.
