Message: If you have points in your distributer, you can set dwell. And actually, setting points gap just gets your spark timing and duration close, setting the dwell dials it in.
If you don't have points, dwell is not an issue for you.

Message: Adjust the points gap to set the dwell. Dwell is how long the points are closed, usually expressed in degrees of crankshaft rotation.
The dwell is adjusted by setting the points gap to a specified distance at maximum opening. A narrower gap gives more dwell and a wider gap gives less. Taking it to extremes, excessive dwell means that the points close too soon after opening, cutting off the magnetic field collapse before it delivers all its energy. Too little dwell gives the magnetic flux insufficient time to build up to the maximum.
Both conditions give a weak spark which gets even weaker as the engine RPM rises and produces misfiring at normal operating speeds. The dwell, as well as spark plug gap, do have an effect on ignition timing. The later the points open, the later the spark comes and retards the timing. The earlier the points open the sooner the spark comes and advances the timing. That is why timing is the last thing to be set in a tune-up.

Message: Since you say it's an "MPI" motor, you cant adjust the dwell. The PCM (computer) controls the dwell.

Message: maybe someone can point me in the right direction, the truck will start and run fine for about 20-30 mins of driving. But then It starts bucking and jerking, if I floor it, sometimes will clear up and drive but most the time I just have to limp it back to my house. I brought it to 2 shops both of them told me theres nothing wrong because I think they just let it idle and then drive around the block then tell me there nothing wrong. Just about everything has been change, sensors, tps, full tune up, coil, distributor, timing chain, only thing left to change is EGR or computor. I have driven around with fuel pressure gage taped to window and it does not change when problem happens. I have almost gone crazy over this problem any help please Thanks. 1992 dodge dakota 5.2

Message: sounds like your cat is clogged, probably not a timing issue if it idles fine.
