Subject: HELP PLEASE!!!

Message:
ok so first off my truck is a 1996 dakota 5.2l 318.... since i got the truck its always had a rough idle and some times when im at a red light or backing into a parking spot my truck will die, or if i accelerate fast and then take my foot off the gas then the rpms will drop and then it will die....

And last week my engine light came on and then it started to act up, when ever i accelerate my oil presseure drops to zero and it feels like my truck has no power but yet its still revving up and the rpms arnt moveing either, and when i come to a stop now, when the truck is just about stopped it will drop to like 150-200 rpm for like 4-5 seconds and then it will just jump back up to like 700-800 rpm and the truck jumps forward (almost rear ended some one the first time it happend but now im ready), and when i accelerate it will start to go and then slowly die and then jump back up and then slowly die and then jumb back up ect... so any help and/or edvice would be great thanks

first thing you should do is read the codes to find out why the CEL is on. try the key trick:
turn the key on/off/on/off/on(on not start) the codes should display in the odometer as Pxxx. when it's finished it will display Pdone. it that doesn't work most parts stores can read them for you for free.

I believe that is for '00 and up; for a '96 don't you have to count number of times the light blinks for the code numbers ?

i wasn't sure if it'd work on the '96. the CEL(check engine light) will blink. it should light/go out pause then light again.

it works like this: 2 blinks/pause/5 blinks= code 25. it's just an example but you should get it.

not sure what codes they use but someone on here should know or you could get a Haynes or Chilton repair manual.

when it stops you could check for fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the fuel rail with a gage.

Let me throw this one out there.....if by some miracle you happen to live in San Diego,I have one of these engine diagnostic code reader things, bring yer truck by and we can scan it, if not then Like Daddio says you gotta get a Haynes manual, it can help alot and you can always refer to it for other things, i always get a Haynes book for all my trucks.

I have the Haynes manual for Dakotas 87 thru 96 and it doesnt have any code numbers so i cant look it up for you but the fuel pump shouldnt be that much but its in the gas tank, unless someone can tell you what that code is,or find that website online that posts all the dodge and chrysler trouble codes, then fuel pump would be a logical start.

Auto parts stores should be able to read your codes for you, for free, and then give you a print out as to what the codes are, solutions, etc.

Works for our '96 mazda Protege.

All cars and light trucks built and sold in the United States after January 1, 1996 were required to be OBD II equipped. In general, this means all 1996 model year cars and light trucks are compliant, even if built in late 1995. Just different processes to pull the codes but they will all respond to a scan tool. Most of your larger chain autoparts stores will scan your vehicle for you if you ask.

On a 1996 Dakota, you should be able to pull basic 2-digit codes by cycling the key 3 times without starting the truck. on/off/on/off/on(on not start). The Check engine light will come on and stay solid for several seconds while it prepares the code test. Then it will start to flash and cycle through the codes twice. There is a code decoder on the DML website. http://www.dakota-truck.net/CODES/codes.html

Well maybe it is time for a second job. Quit whining and just get a second job. That is the problem with you young punks, none of you want to work. It is always mommy give me money for this and that. It is time to grow up and get a set of balls and earn something for yourself. Probably will never happen as most of you kids are dirt bags that will never amount to much anyway.
