Subject: 5.9 swap question IP: Logged
Message: I have just finished swapping in a 5.9 for my old 5.2. The engine runs great, that is not the problem. It idles slightly rough (almost like it has a big cam) which may be possible from who I bought the motor from. Up to about 3000 rpm I have no issues with the engine, but above that I start to get a slight vibration in it. When I say slight, it's enogh that I haven't taken it much past 4000 rpm.
My question is this, I know that the flex plate was on the 5.9 when it was installed, and it still has the convertor from the 5.2. Is the balancer located in this area of the engine or on the front like some other motors? Also could this be the cause of the vibration I'm expierencing?

Message: In the parts catalog, the torque converters carry a differant part number between the 318 and 360. I believe they are balance matched to the engine. If you have a vibration, that would be my first guess.

Message: Either way, the 5.9 requires an external balance weight. Pre-'96 the weight was on the converter. '96 and newer it's on the flexplate.

Message: I guess the converter sounds like it then. I know the flex plate was swapped b/c the 5.2 flex plate was cracked. Also for what it's worth the 5.9 was a 94(from what gen1dak said, balance weights on t.c.) and it went in a 93.
Thanks for the help guys, I'll start looking there.
