Subject: Looking for better fuel mileage? Help. IP: Logged
Message: I know this is a Dodge Dakotas site but I don't have my Dakota anymore. I have a 93 Dodge Ram D150 Reg Cab 2wd with the 3.55 diff and 5.9L Magnum MPI engine. I have a catco converter and higher flow muffler. A fastman 52 mm ported throttle body and drop in K&N Ait Filter. MSD Blaster Replacement Single Connector Coil. The truck has a brass cap and rotor, factory champion plugs and Mopar factory wires. The truck is fully tuned up. I have Amsoil in everything/even the front wheel bearings. Mobil 1 in the engine though. I have gotten 19.5 MPG on the highway at about 70 MPH over a long trip. I was wondering if there was anything that was cheap that could be done to further increase the fuel mileage? Better injectors, or a high pressure fuel pump? I was looking at Flowtech headers. Any ideas. Thanks for any help.

Message: Jim,
Dont let A**holes like buster (who are ruining this great site) deter you. Everyone wants better fuel economy with $3.20 gas.
First off, I must say that 19.5 is excellent mileage for a truck like that - you must really take care of it (and have a 2wd ;-) ).
There is a long post on fuel economy here, which is based on a magnum 5.9 ram i believe:
http://www.dodgeforum.com/m_447500/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm
In short, I think a few things you could do include airing up the tires (38-42psi and I've heard of 50psi) or replacing them with low rolling resistance tires. Put on a tonneau cover, also make sure you have no mudflaps or what not acting as a windbrake. I have also heard that grill blocking does wonders.
In terms of engine mods, electric fans work pretty well in place of the mechanical clutch fan, but can be pricey. I've read multiple posts of using taurus fans and shrouds, and those are pretty cheap if your handy with wiring and can whip up a simple control system.
Good luck and let us know what works for you.

Message: Two weeks ago I changed the Timing Chain and Gears
at my ´93 5.2L 2WD/AT Dakota with 126.000 miles.
After the ECM´s reset and relearning phase, I wonder
what mileage the car won.
For better mileage at older cars I recommend a new Timing Set AND a new O2.

I am converting an older Dak with the 5.2 to carb and electronic ignition for better mpg's. Browse MPGResearch for some ideas. Mine is getting a rare carb with huge ideas from that group along with some hydrogen through electrolysis. 10 - 15% improvement ain't gonna cut it at $4.00/gal. And I don't want to give up my Dak's.

Message: Right now i'm driving a '92 ranger with 4.0L V6. and the way i drive it, i'm only getting an average of 15-16 mpg. If i can get just as good or better with the 4.7L , in addition to the extra power, i'll be happy with it. But all-in-all, i'm not too worried about the mpg as long as it isn't terrible.

I have a 03 QC Auto 4.7 4WD. With a superchips, 3923 plugs, 42psi in the all-terrains, removed clutch fan, I can get 20 on the highway (<70mph) or 16 around town if i baby it. If I thrash a full tank in mixed conditions, I'll get 14-15. In the winter, if I try, I can bring it down to 11-12. 55mph flat no wind? 25mpg. But how often does that happen?
The best thing BY FAR for mpg was driving habits. I picked up 2 alone just learning how to drive. i.e. using only enough throttle to maintain the speed I want, slowing down up hills and speeding up down hills, and anticipating stops.
Future mods include 50psi in tires and a tonneau cover. and maybe HO cams if I can find a set cheap enough.
I love my truck - wouldnt trade it for anything.
Good luck.
Jay

Message: Welcome to the site man, and good luck! This site is dying out, hope you can get some good info though.
Thinkin 2WD or 4WD?
I think a lowered 2WD with the right mods and driver could pull 25 mpg highway. My slightly raised (freebie torsion bar lift) 4WD and 32" tires dont lend itself well to mpgs.
Just an FYI, I stretched my last trip home (tonight) into 19 mpgs (overhead). Never over 35, all city, but little traffic and only a handful of stops. Trip was about 5 miles.

Message: Alex,
Is that truck a 5 speed? you can get good mileage with one, thats for sure (plus about 20 more RWHP). Mines an auto (miss the stick) but I still get OK mileage.
In any case, it sounds like a nice truck - you'll love the sound of that 4.7 under the hood better than any V6 (or alot of V8s for that matter).
