 Subject: 4.7L Slow to Start

Over the last two weeks, my 2000 QC (84K/Auto) has to be turned-over longer to start in the morning (seems to be getting progressively worse). Once warm, it re-starts fine. It also idles and runs normal. No Codes. Any ideas?

check valve in the fuel pump not holding. try turning the key on, wait about 10-15 seconds then turn it to start.

cheap gas has nothing to do with it. i've run anything from Chevron to Stop & Rob in my truck and it makes no difference.

I have had just that experience with a tank cheap gas purchased at gas station on a military base. In my case, cheap gas had EVERYTHING to do with it.

What Daddio said, but go one step further.
The fuel pumps only run like 3 seconds when you first turn the key to ON and then stop. Once you begin cranking it pumps again.
You can usually hear the WHINE of the fuel pump if you listen closely.
Do what he says, except when the pump stops after the 3 seconds or so, turn the off then right back on for another few seconds. Then crank it. Maybe it will have the pressure built up by then.
To test his theory I have an idea.
before you try to start it open the hood. Remove the plastic cap off of the schrader valve on the fuel rail. Depress it (with glasses on to be safe) and it should squirt fuel out pretty good if it has descent pressure built up. If not, then maybe it's doing what he said and bleeding the pressur edown when it sits overnite.
I do know that my 4.7 holds pressure for a little while.
The reason is because whenever I've ran an ATV out of gas and forgot a cas can, I've loosened my schrader core in my fuel rail and stuck a hose over it to bleed fuel into a container for the ATV. It would always spray pretty good for a few seconds until it bleeds down. Then I'd have to start the truck to keep the fuel pump running.

Regarding gas, I haven't purchased any of the "discount" variety lately (I mainly stick with Shell or Chevron). However, I'm sure it's possible to get a "bad" tank on occasion from any dealer.
This morning the truck fired right up without doing anything different. If it reverts back to the longer starts again I will try priming the fuel pump (or check the pressure at the schrader valve). Thanks for the ideas.

The Dak CD (I sent you), has an excellent discussion about the fuel rail, pressure, etc.
What you said is basically consistent with the manual info, except that it says after being off about 5+ hours, it can get down to zero pressure. However, it still keeps fuel in the rail, and repressurizes quickly.
I've been having issues with mine doing this I think, however, sometimes, it still starts right up. Until it won't start redily, I just leave it alone.
