Since I switched to Mobil1 I only change my oil every two years or 40k miles, which ever comes first.

I really dont think anyone is an idiot for changing their oil early. But I do think its unnecessary.
If you do your research properly, synthetic oil does not break down like conventional. The real reason you ever have to change your systhetic oil is because your oil filter can't filter out the smaller particals, and over time they build up.
