My 2000 4.7 Manual Dakota gave me a slow reading 02 sensor code two months ago. I went to the store got a new Bosch sensor, cleared the code and it came back on 2 days later. My mechanic friend at Dodge thought maybe it could be a bad 02. So i got another one. then the code came back on again. He then said i think maybe your ECU is bad. I got a new one then the code came back on P 0171. So then he thought maybe it needs the factory 02 so i got one of those. Code came back on... So here I am two months out and still problems. I get 96 miles to the tank which is about 5 MPG. It sucks! He traced the wires and there are no shorts or bad grounds. Any ideas???????

Thanks

The code is a lean code so the ECU is trying to compensate and is dumping fuel. Lots of Black smoke when I am at like 50% or more throttle.

which O2 are you changing and have you checked the wiring to the O2?

also, have you been losing power steering fluid? some have posted on here that when the power steering pressure switch leaks it leaks into the harness and follows it down to the O2 sensor.

Hmmm good thinking, its the upstream 02.. ya know my power steering has been funny lately. I will check that, i have noticed some oil in the connection of my upstream 02 and i have cleaned it several times. I will check it.

Thanks

if you've had to clean that connections several times there's your problem.

Yea i was thinking that as well, i just cant seem to find a leak. I just checked the Powersteering pressure switch (i think if its right below the fluid resevoir on the hard line?) iT does have fluid on it but it seems like that would be really far for fluid to travel...

Happened to me a few years ago, power steering switch blew, leaks fluid into the wiring harness down to the o2 sensor and fouls it.

Replaced the sensor and PS switch, added fluid no problem now. Very hard to diagnose and figure out too.

Good news, after replacing the power steering pressure switch that was leaking, and cleaning out the O2 conncection atleast five more times, the connection is finally staying dry. However the code still keeps popping back up after about 20-30 miles with the P 0171 code. I am not sure what else to do. I re-check the connection and it is staying dry now. I reset the comp and it comes back on... Any ideas, Thanks in advance for your help.

How is the engine running?

Also when I did mine a few years ago I actually sprayed some electrical contact cleaner on the o2 sensor wires and wiring harness. You could check to see if there is any oil residual on the wires/harness.

The engine runs ok for the most part besides running super rich. It is loaded up a little with fuel so when i am off the gas the engine is kind of loaded up so it kind of shutters if that makes sense. I have cleaned the connnections, taken apart the connectors, atleast 10 times and hosed them down with contact cleaner. They are staying dry now since i put the new power steering pressure switch in.

And yes the Air intake is super clean with a new filter...

This fuel mileage is killing me!!

Hi Brandon. this is something that you might want to do. pull out all the spark plugs and inpect them for black soot. and maybe you'll fine that the left side has a bad injector or low compression.

I think 4 total, 2 drivers side and 2 passangers side.

Take a look and make sure no o2 sensor wiring on either side is coated with oil.

o2 sensors use the wiring harness/outside air as a reference if I recall from reading. Check all 4.
