Subject: Leaf spring swap IP: Logged
Message: I have near new 4leafed leaf springs from my 01 Dakota Sport 2wd,4.7,short bed,reg cab,5spd and would like to put them in my 93 Dakota LE 2wd,5.2,short bed,reg cab, auto with 5 leafs. The 93 rides horrible and are exploring my choices, cheaply. Does anyone know if they will bolt in with little modification?

Message: Here's how to tell:
1. Measure them.
2. Compare to measurements of your '93 leafs.
3. Now you know.
If your pickup rides "horrible," try some new shocks, too.

Message: When a pick up rides bad due to the springs, it's because the springs are too stiff. Meaning that they're designed for more weight than you're actually using.
For a leaf spring to work correctly, it has to be compressed a bit. Unloaded, the springs tend to bounce on the ends until it overcomes the intial force. Once compression starts, then they start to work. That's when the ride improves.
To see if the springs are the problem, put a few hundred pounds in the bed and drive around. If the ride gets better, you have a spring issue. If it doesn't, changing the springs won't help you.

Message: I more or less want to know if anyone has tried the swap. I know the differences of ride characteristics. The reason I have the leafs around is because I changed my 01's suspension to Hotchkiss leafs and coils. I liked the ride stock but built a roadracer out of it. My 93 has a trailering package,10" rear brakes, steering and tranny coolers stock. Extra heavy duty everything but its just a cheap toy.
