have a 2002 Quad Cab. My drivers side rear door locks have stopped working. They do not lock or unlock using my key "orb" and do not work using my drivers side (front) master locking switch.

Where should I start and is this something I need to bring to the dreadful dealership.

Thanks

Barry

If it's just the one door lock not working the problem is very likely in that door. Sounds like a bad actuator. Remove the door panel and the moisture barrier and make sure nothing has come loose or broken in the latch/actuator assembly and the wiring is intact. If you are unsure or unable to tell what to look for, you could remove the other rear door panel for comparison. Then you can check for voltage at the actuator wires by connecting a volt meter and cycling the lock system with the remote or the door lock switch. It should be a reverse-polarity operating actuator with positive voltage on one wire and ground on the other when it locks and the positive and ground changes to the opposite in each wire when the lock cycles in the opposite direction to lock the door. If you have voltage and no obviously broken or binding components in the door, you may have a defective acutator. I have heard the actuator and latch are one unit and can not be bought separately. The dealer can tell you for sure. If it is a bad actuator you should be able to replace it with an aftermarket one, which should cost maybe $20 to $30 at a car audio/alarm shop. Or the shop could replace it for you, and it shouldn't be too expensive depending on where you live.

If the assembly looks OK but there is no voltage present when you cycle the system, I would look for a broken wire or unplugged/loose connectors in the wiring to the door lock assembly. Again, it's probably in that door or in the wiring running through the door jamb. You can test the OE actuator by unplugging it and connecting power and ground to its wires or at the molex plug on the actuator itself with either a 12volt or better battery like you would have on a cordless drill or you can just run power and ground wires from the battery in the truck. Connect power to one wire and ground to the other on the actuator to lock or unlock and then just reverse them to see if it moves in the opposite direction. Don't do that without disconnecting the wiring from the actuator though. That could damage the keyless entry system.

No matter what the problem here is, it will be a lot less expensive for you to fix it yourself or pay an alarm shop to fix it than to have it fixed at the dealer.

Good luck.

Jimmy

My lock issue is a bit different, I have read all the posts and the problem seems to be the keyless or the switch on the inside going bad. My drivers side door will unlock and lock using the door panel switch on the driver or passenger side, but it wont do either if I try to use my key to get in. Now I am stuck keying into the passenger side then unlocking from that doors switch, and walking around to get in the drivers side. Is this still an actuator problem, or something else?

Does the keyless entry remote lock and unlock the doors like it should? If so, and the key lock cylinder on the outside of the door will not unlock or lock the driver's door, chances are there is a problem with either the lock cylinder or the connecting rods or plastic connectors that are used in the lock mechanism. It could also be the lock assembly itself, which is part of the whole door latch, but from what you describe it sounds like to me the lock cylinder is either broken or binding up somewhere.
