does anyone know if the new 302 hp 4.7 has the same motor mounts as the 2003 version? and if so, how feasible a swap would be into the 2003.

Much would depend on type of transmission.
engine swap with manual trans would be easier than with auto trans. If you have auto trans, look at your engine computer - does it have 3 connectors or 4? If it has 4, then it will be easier than if your engine computer has 3 connectors. All auto trans 4.7L engine computers have transmission control unit built in to the engine computer starting with 2003 or 2004 model year. If your engine computer only has 3 connections, then you'll need an engine computer to go with that nice new engine. Maybe wait for a wrecked 2008 Dakota to show up at your local wrecking yard.

motor mounts will be the least of your problems,
computer engine/trans compatibility will probably
turn you away from this project.

i think it has the 4 connectors, but am not positive. what exactly does this help with. not very familiar with the electronics of these newer engines.

As Idle Thoughts said, all Dakotas starting with model year 2004, and some in 2003, had a new Powertrain Control Module (PCM) designated the "New Generation Controller". This new PCM includes the Transmission Control Module (TCM) on its circuit board, requiring that 4th connector. Prior to that change, the TCM was a separate unit, and the PCM had only 3 connectors.
You cannot replace one with the other, or vice versa, without digging deep into the schematics and pin-out diagrams. Even then, you won't know if all that effort will pay off until you try to fire it up.
I think I know what you want, and I want it too: stronger engine without having to change to an ugly truck. I'm sure it's possible, but it'll take some $$$ to pull it off.

Also, the 08 4.7 is drive by wire. It does not matter what pcm you have it will not work unless you get all of the electronics from a donor 08, which includes, at the very least, the pcm, instrument cluster, wireless control module and the totally integrated control module along with the related wiring. These are needed just for the engine to start. The throttle control will need to see the accelerator pedal position sensors and the throttle position sensors as well as the throttle actuator. If the pcm does not see these inputs or the circuits do not meet what the pcm thinks it should, it will derate engine power and/or rpm range. I am not saying it can't be done, but it will take a vast knowledge of the system and quite a bit of money and time or a standalone engine controller which is a lot of money and takes alot of time to tune.

I think for the money it would take to BUY the 2008 engine (the new 4.7 with dual spark plugs, different coil on plug system, etc) you could spend less on your existing engine and get more power.

They probably used a different grind of a cam to rate it at 300+HP. Most likely moved the powerband up (like the Chevy 4.8) and probably killed the low end unless it has VVT which i don't think they do. Maybe they upped the compression slightly as well.

Some things you COULD do to get best bang for your buck on a 4.7, if i had a few thousand to put into it.

11:1 compression pistons. They sell these at KRC for $800
I guarentee that will give you BIG gains. The biggest mod you could do not counting NO2/Turbo/SuperCharger. You WOULD have to run premium unleaded all of the time and fond the coldest plugs possible.

And to go with that mod, you could do the 212 cams with the better cam springs. I think that was like $600

But you would gain over 100 HP and an increase throughout the powerband doing those two things.

The other thing, which I'd prefer. Is doing a turbo setup. You have to be careful. But getting 400HP would be easy. Talking as low as $1,000 if you can do it all yourself and get the parts on a budget. $2,000 for everything brand new.

You would smoke the ever livin' sh*t out of a 2008 Dakota.

Thanks for all the info guys. I didn't know the new engine was FBW. I had just read the review in ORA mag. of the new Dak, and thought that maybe a swap could be simple(assuming not much in the engine bay had changed.) I have looked at the KRC stuff a couple years back and would love to go that route. Maybe I'll look into it again when I get back from Iraq this time.
