Subject: 2000 4.7 liter running rich?
IP: Logged

Message:
The other day while my truck was running, the exhaust seems to smell like it might be running a little rich. There is no smoke or soot coming from the tailpipes, but was wondering what might cause this or if it is normal.

The engine seems to be running ok, and I do keep up on the maintenance like tune ups, etc.

Anyone have any ideas?

Best way to tell if a motor is running rich is by reading the spark plugs - tail pipe can be deceiving.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Kowalski,

I guess by reading them you mean pulling some of them out and inspecting the tips?

just look at the insulators color. a nice light tan color is what you want. i had found a site a while back that had a nice chart with pictures of the plugs and descriptions of the condition of the plugs with probable causes for those conditions.

heres one: http://www.mopar1.us/spark/Sparkplug.html

and another:

Ok thanks

I'll probably pull a couple of plugs and do a visual. One thing I have read about and never have done is clean the idle air control solenoid.

Not sure if that would cause an engine to run rich or not.
