Subject: Engine dies
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2000 Dakota with 4.7 l automatic. For the last month or so, when I start it cold in the morning, the engine will die unless I keep it revved up. Starts up again no problem. Once engine is warm, no problems. Anyone else had this problem and can syggest a fix ?

Regards,

Steve

Sure, a lot of us have seen this. That first cold start in the morning is when your battery voltage will be at its lowest. When the PCM sees low voltage, loss of idle memory is one of the first things you'll notice. Best way to check would be before that first start of the day with a voltmeter. How old is your battery ? Most likely, you need a new one. This can be noticed long before slow cranking.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

3 things come to mind in order of likely cause
1) dirty throttle-body has it ever been cleaned? if not try that first works wonders for lousy idle or stalling vechicles
2)Idle speed motor dirty/defective if you feel ok taking it out and cleaning it like the throttle body do that too. just dont pull the shaft in and out when you take it out. carb cleaner and a toothbrush for both work great
3) bad battery is possible too but since you say the truck starts when cold with no problems. check the voltage drop when cranking. when it drops too low the controller resets the idle speed memory and the vechicle stalls under 10 volts and its battery tme
clean the throttle body and idle speed motor when the truck is warmed up so it'll be easier to start when your done, you may have to crank it a few times with the pedal down to clear it out and keep it running but it will clear in a min or two
good luck be careful and let us know how you make out

Battery is only a few months old.
No problem at all until a month ago. I live in Houston, so it does not get real cold.
No problem cranking.

Forgot to mention that this does not happen every morning. Some days no problem, but seems to be getting worse.

Engine has died twice even when it was warm. Thought it might be one of the sensors, but no error messages when I had a diagnostic check done at Auto Zone.

I may pull the throttle body thid weekend if I get a chance.
