Message: you should be able to. it could throw a code though. i don't want to sound like the smog police but, i'm sure you already know that is illegal.
a lot of 4.7 guys say the restrictive area in the exhaust is really the y-pipe and no so much the cats.

Message: Yes, you can do it. But, it will throw an error code. You'll need to replace the sensors with device that emulates the correct signal. The are usually available on e-bay.
Now, the real question is, why would you want to? You will lose some of your steady cruise performance, and burn more fuel. I have not seen any proof anywhere that this mod will get you more power. And, it's illegal in all 50 states under the federal smog program.
If you're convinced your cats are costing you power, do this instead. Replace the entire Y pipe with a high flow pipe. Replace the stock cats with a performance oriented, high flow cat. Put new O2 sensors back in the original positions. Yes, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Message: The reason the cat is there is because it's designed to run hot,
hot gases flow faster, putting it farther along the exhaust system might cause it to be even more restrictive.
