Subject: cylinder / rocker problems 02 IP: Logged
Message: recent error code for #1 cylinder misfire..confirmed by mechanic. Tech removed the valve cover to reveal #1 rocker arm laying in cylinder drain oil, they suspected the valve float allowed rocker arm to fall out...replaced the lifter, oil change, sparkplugs since they had the top off, air / fuel induction system cleaning service..Got the truck back and it sounded and ran great... 50 miles and 5 days later started the truck to the same if not similar problem! Took the truck back in.. They are noting similar problem in #5 and possible#3 cylinders, what the heck is up?!!? The truck has only 50000 miles and routine maintanance 3-5000. The tech wants to remove the head to see if there are any defects that are causing the problem..Impression is that the bottom of the valve seat is dropping down allowing the rocker to slip?? anyone heard of this with the 4.7?
Longterm potential solution is to remanufacture the head with a new seat/seal?

Message: First, because all this is happening on the same side of the engine, check all the bolts holding the camshafts to the head and head to block. Make sure they're torqued to spec.
You mentioned valve float. You routinely run your engine close to redline?

Message: No the truck pretty much is a daily in town 10 mile round trip commuter. I just got the truck back today from the shop... replaced all the remaining lifterson bank 1. The original lifters were noted to be in poor condition. Hopefully by doing this it may cure the problem...maybe just a bad set of original equipment. The truck currently running great, but it did that last time after replacing the #1 lifter.

Message: The rocker arms that I have seen fall out have been due to the valve seat becoming loose and jamming the valve open slightly for a split second which allows the rocker to fall off. Collapsing lash adjusters, poor oil maintenence, and sticking valve guides are also a cause.
