Subject: Limited Slip Additive IP: Logged
Message: I just had my front and rear axle fluids changed to a full synthetic gear lubricant and I am wondering if you still need to add the "Limited Slip Additive" to the rear.

Message: Maybe. Some of the synthetic fluids contain it and some don't. I can't remember which is which; you'll have to read the label.
If it's not on the label, add it.

Message: This is one of those questions best researched BEFORE the fluid change.
Depends on brand of fluid.
On the bottle or jug of fluid, it will state whether an additive is required.
When in doubt, put in the additive. Can't hurt it.

Message: I changed both front and rear differential fluids to full synthetic a few months ago.
I added the 4oz bottle of friction modifier to the rear diff. It only cost about 9.00 dollars from the dealer.
If you can use something to suck out a small amount of fluid from the fill plug, I would go ahead and add it.

Message: it does depend on the fluid you use, some contain it and some don't.
if you have track-lok then you need to add some if the fluid doesn't have in it already. If you don't have track-lok, you don't need it.

Message: Thank you. It states anti-slip, which I assume means limited slip differential. (I took my smart pills today!!!)
Thanks again.

Message: One more question. It does not have a trailer hitch, so I assume it does not have a tranny cooler. If I put a hitch on, am I still safe to tow a 2000 lbs trailer?

Message: You should be fine pulling a pop up camper, boat or utility trailer that light. I'm asuming it doesn't have a lot of sail area like a cargo trailer or taller camper (which would generally weigh more).

Message: sorry to get off topic a bit here but let me get this straight.
JerryM bought the friction modifier from the dealer for $9.00?!!!
I just bought a 2000 4.7L 4x4 about 6 months ago and they changed the rear diff while it had a PCM flash. The jerk said the additive alone was $89.00.

Message: I actually had a shop change out the rear diff fluid and the front transfer case fluid. Labor cost was 60.00. He did however use a pump and hose to suck out the old fluid which is ok I guess, it does make the job easier.
I provided the new full synthetic fluid and friction modifier for a cost of 50.00
It does sometimes pay to do the job yourself, or shop around and get estimates for work.

Message: I use a gear oil that says no additive needed but the rear-end makes all kinds of bad noise if I don't use it. Be on the safe side and use it.
