Subject: "Rough" Running 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: I've got a an '03 4.7 liter Quad Cab thats starting to stall a little when cold and whose idle is getting "rough". With 77k miles could this be a simple item like spark plugs? I bought it used with 50k miles so I think they are the original plugs. Mileage also seems to be getting worse - I'm averaging about 13 mpg around town. Any ideas? Thanks.

Message: Yup, start with the plugs. Acouple other things to check:
The idle air control on the throttle body might need to be cleaned or replaced ? You have to remove the TB to clean it properly; being careful not to stress the plunger.
Original battery ? If you are seeing this mostly on the first start of the day, the PCM is sensitive to low voltage. Loss of idle memory is one of the first signs; usually well before slow cranking.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: My owner's manual (2000 Dak, 4.7) says to change the spark plugs every 30,000 miles. You certainly can't go wrong doing that!
My truck is also starting to idle rough, and mileage is around 13 MPG. I will be working on the TB and IAC myself soon. My truck has close to 89,000 miles on it now, so I will be doing spark plugs, trans fluid, oil, and PCV valve at 90,000. Am I missing anything?

Message: Thanks Guys. Yes to the original battery...No to the engine codes. Are the plugs hard to change? The local dealership wants $129 just to change the plugs.

Message: The plugs are not hard to change. They go straight down into the cylinder heads on either side of the intake manifold. There is a coil over each plug, held down by a 10mm nut. You will have to remove the air intake assembly, and probably loosen the aluminum water line clamps to get to all the coils.
Disconnect the connector from each coil, remove the nut, and pull straight up while jiggling the coil. After 77K miles they will be tight.
After the coil is off, blow out the spark plug well with compressed air if you can - that will prevent dirt from falliing into the cylinder when you remove the plug.
If these are the original spark plugs, be aware that dodge has a 600 pound gorilla installing plugs at the factory.
Put a little antiseize on the threads of the new plug and torque to spec (sorry, don't remember what that is right now). Remember, you are putting a steel spark plug in an aluminum head, so be gentle. Spray the inside of the coil with some silicone before you snap it back on the plug.

Message: Looks like Ned has you covered, and I agree they are not hard to change if you have the right tools and some mechanical ability. The dealer would probably give you the torque specs on the plugs

Message: thanks for the info. guys but with a very tight schedule lately I forked up about $130 and paid the local dodge dealer to replace the plugs. My truck is running better and with a road trip scheudeled for today and tomorrow I can check the gas mileage.
