Subject: How Can I Get My 5.9 Faster??? IP: Logged
Message: Ok I own the meanest looking R/T, Slammed 4 inches, Flowmasters, R/T Stripes, Jet Chip. Just a mean looking truck, however the performance is not up to par!! Its all looks, I am tired of getting my *ss kicked by these Turbo Diesels! Is there any suggestions besides a supercharger to get this horsepower up to speed? I want approx 25-40 HP.

Define "par."
Turbo diesels have the torque, dude. These sorryass Chrysler gas engines will never catch up.
Well, not without a LOT of help.
If you're not up to the higher horsepower across the power band that you would get with a supercharger, try some nitrous. That'll get you some more horses, but there's a trade-off in severely reduced engine reliability if not properly implemented.

Message: Sound slike you really mena quicker, not faster. Big differance.
To make the truck quicker, you need to do two things: Increase applied torque, and decrease weight.
Torque:
- Lower gear ratio - like 3.92 or 4.11. Even consider 4.56 if your tires are tall enough.
- Add a blower - probably best bang for the buck
- change the cam
- Better heads, like Edelbrock
- Headers and dual exhaust will not increase lowe end torque, and might even cost you some on a NA engine. But with a blower it's a must have.
- Have you considered nitrous? 125 hp at the touch of a button.
Decrease weight:
- The obvious stuff like empty the bed, light weigh body panels, etc.
- Pay carefull attention to wheels and tires. ---- Extra wide 24" rims are extremly heavy. Takes a lot of energy to get them moving and get them stopped.
--- Fat off road tires, again, are heavy. Go to a lighter performance 15-16" wheel/tire combo. Go with a 275-315 rear tire, and 245-255 front.

Message: I think thats a common thing I hear from all the R/T owners. I have the meanest looking R/T around.
one get rid of that jet chip they are crap. you need to do A M-1 intake, ported TB, Cam, super charger. get a custom flash gears, and so on.
but your never going to beat a turbo diesel as just with a programmer they get get like 200 more HP right off the bat. want to beat them? get a crotch rocket or a turbo diesel.

Message: my neighbor has a 07 or 06 chevy 3/4 ton club cab longbed with a duramax and banks kit.He thinks he can take my r/t. I really doubt he can get that 8,000 pound truck to run under 15 secs 1/4 but I KNOW DAMN WELL he can not take corners like me! LOL

Message: The only problem with that is in the 1/4 mile, or between stoplights for that matter, nobody cares how fast you can go around corners.

Message: Cheapest way to make it faster is to drive wide open down-hill.
The other way is to mount a jet engine in the box, and let it take over from the V8.

Message: Get a single plane intake manifold.
Port your heads.(have a pro do this)
(porting your heads can give you 30 to 50 hp alone)
Get a performance cam.
Stroke your crankshaft to 4 inches
Get some headers.
And you will be set
If you turbo or supercharge your looking at around 700hp 600lb torque.
Without forced induction you should run high 11's low 12's
NOS might be the best bag for your buck.
Just make sure your cylinder heads are stout enough to handle the heat.

Message: Budget Turbo Project all the way.
Used turbo's can be found for as low as $100
NEW Turbo's go for $400 for a Borge Warner.
Extra fuel pump, FMU (regulator) blow off valve, MSD BTM, etc going to bring you closer to $1,000 total for the main parts.
Do the pipe yourself and get some kind of an intercooler and you can have 150 to 200 HP gain for not too much coin.
It dropped from the stock 17 sec 1/4 to mid 16's with just the SuperChips and 4.11 gears. the GEARS are what made it .5 sec quicker. Obviously that still wouldn't touch them 15 second near stock turbo diesels.
Then he did the turbo and the superchips removed (you don't want timing advance with a turbo!) and ran a best of 13.69 e.t.
Here is Rammer's truck when it was running good. 360 in a 2WD 1500 RAM. ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwhmNR1OLXU
Copy and paste that into your browser.

Message: i can run a 15 sec 1/4 with my 3500
depending on what it is done to the duramax it will do a 15 easisly
i like the 11-12 second diesels that look like a stock truck
you could buy a 94 2500 for dirst cheap, like $5k-$6k and put 10 into it, and have one fast pickup that will get 18 mpg
I <3 Diesels
1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) Powertrax "traction system", 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

Message: Ummm, a stock diesel can easily tow twice what a Dakota can, and will run in excess of 300,000 miles. Compare the diesel to a full-size gas-engined truck, not the Dakota, and it will have considerably more mileage justification that easily precludes the added cost of diesel.
