Message: i was thinking of installing a performance computer module, but found that there are many differewnt brands and types. For those of you with chips in the 4.7, does it make a noticable difference and was it worth the money? How has it affected gas milage?
Do you recommend any specific types? I aslo heard that you really need to upgrade the exhaust system if installing a chip. More air in = more air out. Is this absolutely required?
thanks fellas

Message: With the 4.7L engine you are very limited, and depending upon the year you may not have any/much choice.
From everything I have read, stay away from Jet Chips: the PCM relearns the modifications and eventually negates any performance gains of the Jet Chip.
If you have a 2000-2003 truck the Superchips tuner will work for you. It gives noticeable gains, and it reprograms the PCM so it won't relearn and override like it does with the Jet Chip.
SCM has a tuner available for this engine, but I'm not sure what years it covers. Go look around on DodgeTrucks.org and you'll find some guys that can provide details.
What's your left foot doing? ============== 2002 Graphite QC SLT Plus, 4.7L, NV3500, Superchips 3715, 3.92 LSD, R/T rear swaybar, no chrome, loads o'fun... 2001 Patriot Blue Durango SLT, 4.7L, 45RFE, Superchips 3715, 3.55 Open (for now) 1999 Forest Green Dakota RC Sport, 2.5L, NV1500, 3.55 Open

Message: A chip doesn't mean more air in, that sounds like a wrong assumption. A good chip or flash will give you more ignition advance, and maybe different fuel and/or shifting tables. Intake mods often work best when combined with exhaust mods - but a chip is different. The custom flash I got improved performance without impacting milage.

Message: Guys sorry to burst your bubble I have use a Jet chip on two different DAKs, one a 4x4 v8 and the other a v6 club cab. There have been times when I have had to remove the Jet chip for troubleshooting purposes and each time the chips were removed I have noticed a lost of power loss even after running them continously for periods of up to 15,000 miles. If the PCM learned around the Jet chip, I certainly would have noticed in that amount of time. Do they work? Simply put yes, you need to make sure get the right one for you vehicle.
92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Message: So when you say that I need to make sure I get the right one for my vehicle, how do you suggest I determine that?
Does the manufactuer specify which trucks it works better on? Sounds like the Superchips tuner is the one I should get...I have an 03 V8 4x4 QC.
Thx guys.

Message: Manufacturers typically just claim "up to" a certain HP - usually whatever motor they found their product made the best gain for. The v6 guys usually are the ones defending the jet chip; while the v8 guys here tend to favor superchips.

Message: I tried a Jet chip in my 5.2. I could not tell any difference but I did get about .5 mpg improvement testing four tanks of gas. I recently bought a Dodge 5.9 crate motor with a larger cam and other valve train improvements over stock. Just to test the Jet chip, I plugged it in on this performance motor. I still got no noticable improvements. I think a performance flash that actually adjusts the timing, the fuel curves, shift points and torque perameters is a much better use of money.
