the common misconception with exhaust systems is they will give you more HP, wrong, exhaust mods will only be helpful if you do something with the intake as well, its gotta be balanced with the intake and exhaust systems

i put a "hat top" intake with fuctional hood scoops along with the headers and it helped a lot

I put Gibson SS headers on my 99 318 and they were great. Perfect fit and make sure you get the correct year non EGR type. You must start somewhere and exhaust is just fine. After this look into a TB and Air intake. Don't screw around with getting different years to fit it will kick you in the ass later during the install.
Long tubes are fantastic but you need alot of mods to be using them a site called truedualexhaust.com has some 3" ones and full exhaust if you want the information. I personally still run my Gibson shorties with Magnaflow mufflers behind a 408 with Edlebrock 2.02 heads.
