Subject: Stroker and tranny plans for 97 5-sp 4x4 IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1997 Extended-cab 4x4 with a 5.2 NV3500 5-speed. It has 3.55 gears with 33 inch BFGs and a 3 inch body lift. The first, second, and third gear syncros in my tranny are on their way out and as you could imagine, my truck is pretty slow and gets bad milege with the bad ratios. I plan to put in 4.10s to help, but I also would like more motor.
First I would like to address the engine. In early spring or summer I would like to stroke my engine or by a stroker block. I would like to build a reliable pump gas torque monster that starts early and signs off at around 4000-4500RPM. I've looked at the 390 and that looks really good, but I also found out that the 408 stroker can be internally balanced. Which motor do you think would meet my goals the best? I'm still going to use it as a daily driver in California where I will need to meet smog and would like as good of milege as possible with a torque set up.
Second I would like to address the tranny issue. I know a NV3500 would not handle the power. Mine isn't even handling the power my 5.2 is putting out right now. Because I have a 3 inch body lift, would the NV4500 fit without cutting the floor? If not, how much cutting would I need to do? Are there similar mounting spots, or would I have to make my own mounts?
Is there anything else that would now work with this set up? Thanks for you help.

Message: try those 4.11's or 4.56's before even thinking of motor mods. you would be surprised what kind of results come from gears. to just discard the 5.2 that quick is foolish. its a great truck motor, durable, decent power, and a sh!t load of mods for it.

Message: I'm with you; I'm definately going the 390 route on my '98 5.2 4X4 reg. cab auto. The 5.2 is good unless you're pulling a load in hills. It's just short on torque and going to low gears just kills your mileage as you're running high rpms all the time. Most 5.2 mods only help on the top end. With the 390 stroker option, you can stay with your own block and all the hookups and get the kind of torque that allows you to run at lower rpms. I will keep my 3.55's. You can get a crank/piston set (use your own rods) for under $1000.
