Subject: Anyone with a 318 and strait pipes? IP: Logged
Message: Was thing about getting rid of my worn out stock muffler and running a strait pipe instead of popping for a new one. Just looking for a meaner sound and a little more free flowing system. Any problems with back pressure?

Message: I redid my exhaust by removing the cat and running single 3" from manifolds thru a flopro muffler. It sounds better than all the duals i have heard on dakotas. Its a great and cheap solution.

Message: Here in California we have to have the cat on. I was told that if I remove the muffler and keep the cat, I wouldnt be to loud to alert the authorities but still sound pretty mean. I am just worried about my performance going down the crapper. What do you think?

Message: i dont know why a exhaust with no muffler would perform differant than a exhaust with a straight through muffler.
i have heard a durango R/T with a straight pipe, and i think it would get on my nerves. its a little too loud. (and i like 'em loud)

Message: Hey man. My buddy has a 98 5.2L. He cut the muffler off and ran duals to the bumper, the duals split off to 4 tips. It is really in my top 10 in the best sounding exhausts. Sounds really mean. Especially the start up. Suprisingly enough, it really isnt that loud on the inside just driving in traffic. I guess aobut as loud as a flowmaster. Its really deep and throaty. He is thinking about getting headers too. That will be a good day. I have a question though, he wants to get the 1.7 rockers. Who makes them? How much$$$? And, someone said it will make the truck sound like its got a cam? Is that true?
Thanks, and Good luck Andrew,
Joey

Message: I have straight pipes on my 97 now. It sounds great. I didn't notice any performance differences. I use to have a different 97 which had straight pipes on it too only I also put a high flow cat on it. It was really loud but had a lot more power. The only problems I had with it was I about had the cops called on me cause I would get on it when I left friend's houses. I'm planning on putting a high flow on this one too.

Message: Hey man, I am the one Joey spoke of with the 99 5.2L and straight pipes. It is indeed a most beautiful sound. If you add a K&N open element filter, it'll sound like a savage beast sucking in low-flying birds. At least that's what I heard.

Message: I've got a 97 5.2L and I've got cat back duals. I want to make it louder but I don't want any check engine lights to come on or have my performance go down the drains. Which do I remove to get a better sound without racking up noise violations...the cat or the muffler? Or is there some other suggestion that I just haven't heard yet.

Message: I wouldn't recomend removing the cat completely. You will actually lose horsepower. 97 and up have a Oxygen sensor behind the cat. If you remove the cat this will throw off your computer and it will make your fuel mixture too lean. This will cause you to lose horsepower and possibly cause long term damage to your engine. I would recomend just removing the muffler and getting a high flow cat. The horse power will go up and the exhaust will rumble enough to set off car alarms.

Message: I have a '01 R/T and I set off car alarms w/ just a Flowmaster 40 and duals out the muffler. I've also been thinking about cutting off the 3rd cat. I heard from somewhere the only place the O2 sensors were at were the precats and there wasn't a sensor around the 3rd one. And how will you lose HP taking it off...older muscle cars dont' need cats and they make plenty of power. :)

Message: Hay MikD ... Old muscle cars don't have computers! Back pressure and mixture are measured with those O2 sensors..... I dont even think old muscle cars even have a gas recycle can ... let alone an O2 senser! Much love for the old Chargers but the dinasoaurs did die for a reason!
The straight pipe thing... I got a H/F cat back duel glasspack thing goin and its not a bad thing soo far. Likes to gurgle a little when you get off the peddle @ 65. And the sound when you get on it ......... Its almost too nice.....
Also have a ram hood with k&n open filter ......its all fun n games about the bird joke till you see feathers n a claw hangin out you hood. I now have a "bird catcher" screen just for that reason!
Still like to think and wonder. is there a such thing as too much flow??? cause i got to be hittin it sometime soon!!!!
P.S. the bird commited suiside!!! I didn't aim for it like my wife would say!!!!

Message: Don't worry about cutting the cat out and losing power or running lean. the sensor that reads fuel mixture is the pre cat o2 sensor. the post cat o2 sensor looks for a difference to se if the cat is working. if you cut the cat out you'll get a check engine light but if you scan the code it will say ineffcient cat. I cut my cat out on my 318 and gained sound and power. I never ran lean even on the bottle. if you light bothers you by a kat box so the computer thinks you have a cat

Message: Cut the 3rd cat off already and it sounds a hell of alot better and feels like it flows better, and no I'm not confusing the tough sound for power, I can feel it. And no trip light so far, I dunno if it takes awhile for the computer to realize its not there or what. I heard from somewhere there wasn't a sensor for the 3rd cat, only on the precats.

Message: I have a 99 with a 318 and strait pipes. I actually have true duals from teh manifolds back with an 'h' pipe and dumps. After the dumps i have a 2 chamber 'turbo' muffler for each side and strait pipes back. Combine that with the k&n filter and a bit of a 'custom' intake (piping to the front grille where there used to be a piece of plastic) and i get much better throttle response and added power (especially at about 70+mph). I havnt track tested it since the mods, but i feel it is an improvement. Yeah, you guys heard my correctly, my cat is gone. and i run it w the dumps open occasionally just for the hell of it. SUPER loud, sounds like a pissed off tiger. It turns heads just idling by. sounds beautiful and mean at the same time.
