I have been noticing recently when I have my 4 wheel drive engaged, it makes a ticking sound from the front end when making a turn. I figure that's the cv shaft.
However, this morning, it had snowed, so i had my 4wheel drive on for a long while, and it was making a clunking sound from the front end. Kinda the the best way to explain it is it sounded like a rod knocking in the engine, except not that loud (it's not a rod knocking).
Can a cv shaft make that clunking noise when the vehicle is going straight? Or how about under a load going up a hill with the wheels straight?
I sure hope this isn't a transfer case problem.
Also, how hard is it to replace the cv shaft on a 2002 4wd dakota?

WHen I had this noise on my 1998 Dakota, I took it in. Nothing was found. Driving down the road, the front drive U-Joint next to the transfer case froze and shattered the transfer casing. Cost $1500 to replace the transfer case, front drive U-Joints, etc. I would recommend you have this checked!

Mine was doing the same thing. When I looked under the CV boot that is on the front propeller shaft was gone from last years snow and ice. When the joint got filled with sand too and start making a terrible noise. I pulled that shaft off and found it is not rebuildable. I found the best place to replace it, the guy sells on his web site and eBay and it is a converted propeller shaft.The shaft is only $245 and replaces the CV part with a modified greasable U joint. The shaft comes balanced and ready to install. It is a much better price then a front propeller shaft anywhere else that I could find. His name is Eric and his number is 800-270-5224.
