Subject: 3.92 axle milage IP: Logged
Message: Just traded my 2002 3.9v6 2 wheel drive for a 2003 4.7v8 4x4. The v6 had a 3.55 axle and the new one is 3.92. Also the new one is AWD when not in 4x4.
I used to get 550-600km per tank with the old and now get about 400km with the new. (sorry about the KM crap but I live in Canada).
I've been told that if I change the rubber from 265's to say 285's it reduces the axle ratio and I'll get better milage. Anyone know if this is true and will it be enough of a difference to make it worth the trouble?
Love the new truck and power is no comparison to the 3.9 but sure wish I could get a bit better milage as I commute everyday.
Thanks for any help!

Message: If you're lucky, you might gain 1-2 mpg by changing your rear end ratio.
BUT, a lot of V8 owners have reported a gain in mileage by going from 3.55 to 3.92 or 4.10. The engine doesn't work as hard, and therefore doesn't burn as much fuel - even though it's spinning faster.
What is your actual mpg/kpg? that's an easier number to compare.

Message: That is true that it will make the gears "higher", but it is not going to help you with mileage. I got just as good of gas mileage with my V8 that I did with my V6. The lower gears help out a lot in the 4.7s. :)
Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer. well at least a stock one
