Subject: Dakota trans swap and APS torque conv
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi - the 42re trans is dead in my 99 Dak. :-( I'm wondering if I should get a reman 46re - what's involved in doing the swap??? Is it just simple, or do I need different crossmembers, etc.?

Also, should I pony up for the APS torque converter? It sounds like it walks on water, but I've never talked to anyone that bought one.

My truck is relatively stock and is a 4x4 CC with the 318.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and info!

on the torque converter, if you wan the APS for the sake of having an "APS" t/c go for it but, stay with a stock "stall speed". i see no benefit going to an aftermarket t/c unless your truck is heavily modded and you're doing some type of racing.

No, I don't want to have it for the sake of "bragging rights". I'm trying to hold down a new house (read mortgage) and this is a bad time to need a trans. I just thought that since it isn't much more then a new TC from the rebuilder, that if it really gave me a performance advantage on the "cheap", that I could see doing it.

FWIW - I would ask for a lower stall speed then stock - not higher! I can't believe how much the truck revs before it moves when I tow. Must be DC softening the blow to the trans so they can warranty it longer. My old Fords would start pulling at least 1000rpm lower.

i'd advise against going to a lower stall speed. i think on the 4x4's the stall speed is 1800rpm which should be right where that 318 starts to make good torque. on the 4x2's it may be about 13 or 1400 rpm because the 4x2's don't have as much weight to get moving as the 4x4's.

something else, the v6 torque converters should fit and maybe have a higher stall than the v8's. if that's what you're really after you could check into it.

Ok, I'm thinking I'll leave well enough alone and replace with an OEM again. Thanks
