What's your rear end gearing?

I know this sounds counterintuitive. But lower gears will often fix exactly the issue you're asking about, and might possibly increase mileage a tad.

lots of guys on here w/ 4.7 4x4's love the 4.10 gears. some have even gone with 4.56:1. and some have posted gains in mpg with the 4.10's.

you could check with the guys @ www.krcperformance.com

or

www.hughesengines.com

tell them what you want to do and i'm sure they'll have something in stock or a custom grind for you.

Cruise throught the Comp Cams or Crane Cams web site. Look at the descriptions and see something that's close.

You're going to be looking for something like 220-230* duration @ .050, split pattern, and less than .500" lift.

A pair of Jeep HO cams will help the low-end torque. Keep the stock '01 intake manifold. Good buys on HO cams are $130-$150 each. No other parts to buy, just the cams.

Good advice from 01Motorsport - a lot of us have swapped those cams in.
You can't assume you have 3.55 by the 4x4 manual combination; there is no corelation. While most recent Daks (all drive combinations) have 3.55 gears; 3.92 is an option. A sticker in the glove box will tell. I've heard of 3.92 gears in manuals more than the autos.

i appreciate the feedback. im not sure what gears i have, ill look tonight. but i did call crane cams and they will regrind both of my cams for right at 175 for both cams plus shippin of course. i thought that was a pretty good route to go. i was lookin at a 212/212 duration with a 502 lift. what do yall think?

Possible piston slap?
It's when your valves contact your pistons.
Very Bad!!!!

Mikey - That's not piston slap. Piston slap is when the pistons slap around because they are too loose in the bore - a problem Chevy has been getting a reputation for.

Jake - you might want to compare those #s to the #s for the stock HO cams we recomended; available straight from your dealer. Go too hot, and you'll be moving the powerband higher than what you said you wanted. Mopar grinds are usually slightly different for the exhaust and intake; rather than symetrical as you are thinking. The HO cam will also drop right in; while the Crane regrind could likely require more dissasembly (usually have to add shims to the valvetrain for a reground cam to make up for the material that was cut off).

bob thznks for the feed back i just wanna get it straight. im not really sure i know the duration but what is the .050 split. Is that like a valve overlap? i dont know. i was talkin to KRC and they said a 212/212 dur with a 502 lift. but it sounds like your cam maybe a little better than what they said.

"@ 0.50" is for the duration. You'll find two duration specs listed. One is "advertised" ignore that. has almost no impact on real performance. The second is measured @ 0.050" of valve lift. This number is what counts.

"split pattern" means that duration will be differant for intake and exhaust valves. With stock heads, that's important.

Jake,

Another manual tranny man!!-- Cool.
whispering now 'autos ..........

Jake you may indeed have 3.55's, look in your gglove box at the sticker, provided they haven't been changed already.

If you go with any bigger than stock tire size height, even 1/4 to 1/2, or 1-2 inches, this proportionally changes your gearing. If you want a little tighter gear, go smaller some, etc.

The people the 'daddio' are talking about with 4.10's or 4.56's, have Larger tires, and almost always have an auto tranny, which has a much longer 1st gear than our manual NV3500 tranny does. Changing you gears, requires a front and rear set on your 4X4, more $$

Without doing any math, 410's and 33" tires, is probably about a 3.55!!

well my final plan with the truck is transplanting a cummins drivetrain with 44" tires, solid axle in front, triangulated 4-link front and rear with an air rise suspension. but this progject will have to wait. see i have plenty of time but no money. and usually when you have money you have no time.
