Subject: 2000 4.7 turns over but wont start freq.
IP: Logged

Message:
Recently my 2000 4.7 liter has been turning over fine but not starting. It has only 54000 miles. I have already replaced the fuel pump about 7000 miles ago. Since the problem began, I have replaced plugs and tuned up, replaced crank sensor. I can hear the fuel pump running. The problem is becoming more frequent. It cranks but shows no sign of starting and then after sitting for 10 min to 24 hours, starts fine. When it doesn't start, I can smell gas after trying a few times. Any ideas?

Yes. I have taken it in to a shop and, as it was not experiencing the problem at the time, the computer did not provide any answer.

I don't know much about 4.7 Thottle bodies, but it might be the idle air control solenoid. My buddies went out on his 99 318 - it wouldnt start or run without some throttle manually applied. Quick and easy fix. Does yours start when tapping the throttle?

Other things to try include pulling an injector rail (leaving everything connected) and placing a paper towel under it and have someone else crank it. (Obvious caution is needed with this.) If the injectors aren't opening properly, it will be easy to spot on the paper towel.

Next would be to see if you have spark. Pull a coil, rig up a way to ground a plug and see if it sparks when someone cranks it.

Just a couple basic places to start. Air, fuel and spark.

Jay

dankirs; I also own a 00 dak quad cab with the 4.7l and a while back it would either die or wouldn't start. turned out to be the cam position sensor located on the right head below where the valve cover sits along where the timming chain runs. It also didn't show a code. Hope that helps.

Same problem with my 00 4.7 and ended being the camshaft position sensor. Easy to change out and pretty cheap.

9 years later. I'll bite anyways.

I'm guessing it's a 4.7? Check the fuel pump and
/ or crank position sensor.

I can’t believe this site is still operational.

Anywho, I would check fuel pump / fuel pump relay.
