Message: Won't hurt engine; but it will throw a code if you have the federal emissions '00 4.7. Do you know which emissions package or how many cats you have ? How did you determine it is bad ?

Message: AS asked, how many cats, and which one do you think is bad? Is it throwing a code about an 02 sensor? Then it's probably a bad sensor.
I've heard of these configurations on the 4.7:
1 large cat, w/ sensors.
2 precats w/ sensors, no third cat.
3 cats = @ precats w/ sensors, and 1 large cat after the Y pipe, that has no sensors. (Mine was this way)
But I had the third sensorless large cat cut out, no codes, no emission failures, no funny smell, runs like a bat of of hell, so I funny I just about fell, but really, how could you tell?

Message: your cat could still by covered under the federal emmissions warranty of 8yr/80k. if it is actually bad i would replace it with an aftermarket hi-flo version. still legal that way.

Message: If there's an o2 sensor installed past the cat, then you can buy a device to bypass the o2 sensor. That will take care of any check engine lights.
Beyond that, it might reduce back pressure and thus torque. That could be further influenced if you have already put in a after market exhaust system that further reduces back pressure.
