Message: Greg,
I havent done an engine swap, but I HAVE to assume the 5.2 will be cheaper and easier to swap. Im sure there are others on here that have done this. A 96 318 MPI may fit no problem, but there might be a problem with the mounts. Besides, if you go with a 318, it will be relatively cheap and easy to build up (1.7RRs, TB, maybe some internals) before you swap it in.
The tranny may be another issue. Is it an AX-15? I doubt it will hold ANY V8 very long. A NV3500HD (or non-HD) is probably available cheap somewhere.
Someone out there that has actually done this back me up...
In any case, good luck with it. Dont let myself or anyone else stop you from doing what you want.

Message: i haven't done this swap either but, my approach would be to find a donor truck, '00 - up with a 4.7 drivetrain and start swapping. hope you have some fab skills. you'll need them unless someone makes a swap kit and you want to pony up the coin for it. motor mounts and wiring would be the hardest things IMO.

Message: I agree daddio,
The mounts will be easy if you have fab skills and tools compared to the wiring. Thats why I recommend a 318. I know I said earlier a 96 or up MPI, but after thinking, the wiring harness is probably *mostly* there for a pre-96 EGR 318.
In fact, if your taking on a project of this proportion, you may be ahead to put in a 5.7. I know that it has been done before in a genIII, but I lost the link to the thread (it wasnt on this forum).
Again, good luck.
