Subject: 4.7 oil pressure
IP: Logged

Message:
hi guys, i have a 4.7 engine 99k miles. I noticed me oil preesure starts to drop when i stop or stand at idle after warmed up. slowly the gauge goes to zero and the light comes on to check gauges. i checked my oil and its fine, then changed it and it still happens. oil pressure is fine when im on the gas, it stays right near 40, only happens when i come to a stop. does this sound like the oil pump going bad? or maybe the sending unit?

please help
thanks

when in doubt, first check it with a mechanical gage. could be the pick up is partially clogged.

Goes to zero? Don't ever start that thing again and if it went to zero and it is the pump you prolly already eat up every bearing in that engine. I personally would drain the oil, drop the pan, and see if you find metal shavings from the bearings. I know it sucks but no engine will handle 0psi for even a couple seconds.

the first time i noticed it i heard a "ding" and the check gauge light was on, i saw the oil pressure gauge at zero and shut it off right away, checked the oil, then let it sit for about 9 hours while i went to work and back(in a diff vehicle). got home, started it it up, oil pressure was fine(at 40), drove it a few miles, fine, then as i slowed down to turn on my street the pressure started going down slowly, i watched it and when it got close to zero i pushed the gas and turned, it went back up while i was driving, then when i stopped it did the same thing. there are now noises coming from the motor and i changed the oil and noticed no shavings. Also i have a friend who has a 1997 with a 5.9 and he said his does this all the time(and he just drives it lol!!!!). I was thinking the pump was bad but not 100% sure that thats the problem and was looking for anyone who knows of this before i do try to remove the oil pan.

I'm in no way trying to scare you. If it was me I would do the mechanical guage test because they are way more acurate than the electrical guage IMO. If that doesn't work when it warms up then drop that pan and put a new oil pump on it it shouldn't be to much and its way better than cleaning the pickup screen. I'm not saying that cleaning it wouldn't work but with the time it takes to drop the pan and re-install it I would hate to go through that and it still does it. This is what my 4.7 did at 140'000 miles. Its better safe than sorry and I would rather fix a part that didn't matter than one that did matter and miss it(I think I said that right)...lol.

If you never heard a knock when it dropped to zero it may be the gauge but if I where in your postion with the miles and the 4.7's bad oil pumps I would price that pump and put one on. I'm just talking from experience. I'm glad mine went because I got a 408 stroker engine. Hope this helps.

If it knocks for a couple seconds you can kiss your bearings goodbye because that means no oil on rings or bearings and that causes that knocking sound. Thats why I said that before but if it didn't knock your good to go.

thanks for the replies....no knocking noise, and i am planning on trying a mechanical gauge tomorrow(if i have time)my friend has a new one in the garage. and if i do drop the pan, i will definatly change the pump not just clean the screen, if im already there might as well do it.

If theres no knocking you caught it before my 4.7 had a chance...lol. Very good choice on the droping pan and going ahead and putting a new pump in again my 4.7 never had the chance. I don't know why I didn't do it but I just didn't but again I said I wanted it to go so I could get a 408. Good luck with the engine. Let us know. If you where near Fort Smith,AR I'd offer to help out. I love engines and grew up around hot rods so engines is what I know.

oh and thumper just for future reference you cant replace the oil pump buy dropping the pan you have to pull the entire front end off the engine because it runs directly behind the timing chain.

I have a 2000 Dakota with 106k miles with a 5.9l. When driving the other day the oil pressure gauge went to 0. I changed the sensor on the top of the block and changed the oil that was from 1500 miles ago. When started the pressure was at 75-80 after 4-5 miles it moved down to 30-35 and after 2 more miles it fell to 0 where it stays. There was no motor noise when it was at 0. I drove it about a mile on 0 oil presurre with still no noise. Could it be the gauge in the dash? Or is it the oil pump? What are your thoughts?

check w/ mechanical guage before you do anything else even driving it. could be guage or could be pump.

I have an 2002 4.7 and same thing happened to me, let off throttle and check gauges lite comes on and oil pressure was at zero, touch the throttle a little and pressure goes back to normal. So I parked the truck checked my oil level and the oil level was higher than it should be. I pulled my oil filter off and it had no oil in it. I put a new filter on and started the engine, oil pressure fine, shut engine off and checked oil level. The oil level was back to normal. when the engine warmed up the pressure dropped to zero again. Shut the engine off, checked oil level and it was too high again and no oil in the filter again. Also there was no bad noises coming from engine when oil pressure dropped.

2002 4.7 4wd, I was on my way home from work (12mi) when I got the (Check Guages) light. The oil pressure was at zero with no movement, then not 2 seconds later the engine shut off and I coasted to an easy noise free stop. No noises, no high temp, oil level is fine. Now the starter engages but the motor will not rotate??

sorry

Your motor probably bit the dust. Try to rotate the crank with a breaker bar and socket. If its locked up, you're into a rebuild or getting another motor

Chris the above response is correct
Sounds like you seized the motor, However
You have to be sure
So as stated above
Get a socket and breaker bar on the crank
See if you can turn the motor any

and in my opinion, If it is....

Rebuilding a seized motor isn't worth while
If I were you I'd like for a new or low mileage used one
