My 2000 gets between 13-15 mpg depending on how I drive. I would not expect too much better than that.

Keep it tuned up and tires set at 35 psi.

Ouch ! I get 15 from my 4.7 RC without any effort. Even towing 5000 or more only drops mine to 11; 10 seems incredibly low.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I agree 10 mpg is bad and something might be wrong.

Keep the truck running good by replacing plugs, air filter, etc. and make a weekly check on your tire psi

I thought it was low too, so I took it to two different dealerships and they changed plugs and a few other things but no change. I just figured it was because of the 3.92 gears and personal driving habbits. I dont really mind its alot of fun to drive and wouldn't trade it for anything.

You must jockey the throttle all the time to get that bad of milage. I use to drive a hotrodded bigblock old ford pickup and thought it was terrible to get 12 around town. 10 in a 4.7 is just bad.

I let my dad use it for a week while his truck was in the body shop and the best he could get out of it was 12. Course we live in WV and there is not flat land here its all hills. Now I can take my avalanche and get 14-16 easy with it in town, so I dunno mabye there is something wrong that the dealerships are overlooking.

I have an 02 QC 4x4 with 4.7L auto. I get 15.5-16.5 on average. I have gotten 19 on highway before driving 65-70 with cruise control.

A friend has 03 QC 4x4 with 4.7L auto, he gets 12-13 mpg on average, no idea on long highway trips.

I have 3.55, not sure what gear he has, I've not taken the time to check or ask.

Have you changed your air filter lately.

Also are you calculating your MPG, or do you have the digital display option?

I have a wright express card. The company I work for buys all my gas cause Im on call 24 hours a day. It keeps track of the odometer reading, which vehicle I use and how many gallons I buy, then I get a report at the end of the month that shows cost of operation and mpg for both my trucks. The dakota has a cold air intake on it its got about 6000 miles on the filter. Mabye I will try NGK plugs and see if that helps they put champions in it last time and it only has 29000 miles on it.

Hey Shadetree, how many miles are on the truck? Have either of the two dealers suggested looking at the O2 sensors? As they get old they can richen up the A/F mixture to the point it eats into your MPG.

Did you see the old spark plugs before they were tossed? Were they sooted up or did they show they were burning cleanly?

Doe it have a leak somewhere in the fuel system?

Are the brakes dragging? With it lifted off the ground are the wheels easy to spin? There has to be some reason(s) why so much gas is going into moving the truck.

The 3.92 gears aren't going to negatively affect your MPG. In fact, everyone (I have read in postings) that has gone from 3.55 to 3.92 or 4.10 reports an increase in city MPG and highway MPG is pretty much the same. So if anything, you have the better setup gear-wise.

The truck only has a little over 29000. I didnt see any of the old parts they were all done under warranty so i didnt question it. It doesnt leak that I can see I had a caliper lock up last summer and fixed it, but I didnt notice a drag on any of the other wheels. However ocassionaly I have noticed that ocassionaly I will get soot on the rear of my bed just above the tail pipe so mabye I will take it to work and put it on the scanner and see what the O2 sensors are doing. Thanks guys

Black soot on the tailpipes is bad for sure, and sounds like an o2 sensor which can make the engine run rich. You usually can smell it also.

Check your power steering fluid reservoir to see if it is low. There is a pressure switch on the PS pump discharge line which blows, leaks fluid into the wiring harness and fouls the drivers side o2 sensor. Happened to me a few years ago, hard as hell to figure out. If you do have a low PS fluid level, pull the connector off this switch (right next to the battery) and check for fluid.

I got about 13-14 Mpg when I had a 3.7L(V6) '05 4x4QC Dakota and my current '07 4.7L 4x4QC Dak is getting about 10-11 Mpg on e85, so given the 25-30% expected reduction in Mpg on e85, this is about the same for both engines.
I expect the low Mpg is due to my driving mostly back and forth to work which is pretty close to where I live (so lots of speed bumps on my street, a freeway on-ramp, then downtown traffic lights.)
When I drove the family up to Frankenmuth, MI last week (about a 2 hour freeway drive), we got slightly better than 13 Mpg on e85.
