Subject: Free Flow Cat? IP: Logged
Message: I have a '03 Dakota 4.7L that is stock other than a Flowmaster 40 muffler with dual pipes out the back. I lost a little low end grunt when I has the muffler installed. I can hardly tell. I love the sound. I've been thinking of doing a free flow cat next. What will this do to the sound? I want the same tone, maybe a little louder. How does it do for performance? What is a good brand to look at? Thanks.

Message: Your dakota already has a free-flowing cat from the factory. Negligible loss of exhaust gas flow through it.

Message: Really? I never knew that. What if the first two cats went missing? I'm pretty sure I have two small ones upfront and then the bigger one more towards the muffler, right?

Message: Well, that's a question only you can answer, by crawling under. A couple different configurations that year, depending on the area of the country or state it was sold.
Go look.

Message: If you have the 2 precats, that's where your O2 sensors are. Removing those would set the MIL.

Message: I checked and I have two pre-cats and the large cat. Would removing the large cat do anything? I doubt that I can because of state laws around here.

Message: Might be worth a couple HP, not much, and like you say - could be a problem with inspections. Federal law, I think, as well as some states. Have you done anything with the y-pipe yet ? That seems to be the major exhaust bottleneck. Some stock styles are more dinged in and restrictive than others; I've seen at least 2 different stock designs. There are some better flowing aftermarket ones.

Message: So you're another one of these guys who cares more about sound than performance ? I always liked the sound of any motor I had that would pull away from the competition...

Message: Hahaha, yeah. I'm all about sound. If I can gain some performance, then it's even better. As long as I don't loose any performance then I'm happy.

Message: How about some info on where one could get the aftermarket why-er-y pipe? Can the stock v-8 fit stock v-6? Are there years that are more free flowing than others. Mine are 94's v-6's.

Message: Hi-flow catalytic converters and y-pipes at: www.magnaflow.com I have larger primarys/y-pipe/hi-flow cat/Magnaflow 22"/2 1/2" duals on my '01 4.7. Larger pipe diameters and hi-flow cat make the exhaust louder, but the 22" muffler makes up most of the difference. I went for more performance/mpg/sound without interior resonance; cake and eat it, too. If I had to "pick" something, the y-pipe and hi-flow cat made the biggest difference.
