Subject: Engine and Trans Swap IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1994 Club Cab 4x4, 5.2, manual transmission with a little over 220,000 miles that has gone back into daily service. I am thinking of picking up a junk yard 5.2 to rebuild while I am still driving my truck. I would also like to switch to an automatic transmission in the process. There is a local junk yard with a 1993 Club Cab 4x4 with a 5.2 and automatic. How much would I have to take from that truck for a successful swap? Can I reuse my transfer case, transmission mount, drive shaft and wiring harness from my 1994 or should I take all that from the 1993? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Message: usually going from manual to auto and auto to manual is a very time cunsuming and expensive thing. theres so many sensers and wiring. in my opinion its not worth it at all. it will be more of a pain if anything. ive seen it done and i wouldnt do it. better off buying a auto in my opinion.

Message: I agree with brianj,
with a 14 year old truck there will be plenty
of 'while you at it' parts to replace.
Can you test drive the parts donor truck ?
Unless rebuilding that too, you'll only know if the automatic transmission works once you've finished the entire project.
sure it's been done before,
but stuff like this is like opening a can of worms
IMO stick with an engine rebuild if you like but
if you really want an automatic, look for another truck.

Message: It seems the majority opinion is to keep the manual transmission, I was looking for something a little different after 15 years with the same truck, but I already have a 63 falcon project and I don't want the truck to become a second large project right now.
Can you tell me what other vehicles I can look at to find a rebuildable core for my manual transmission? Will a full sized Ram with a V8 and manual have a transmission that will swap in? I want to rebuild the engine and transmission without taking the truck out of service.
Thank you.

Message: What ever you do, DO NOT let High Gear in Memphis rebuild your transmission, they rebuilt mine twice got it wrong both times then wouldn't honor their warranty. I wound up doing it myself, and I got it right. I paid $3000 just so High Gear could do it wrong. Like the old saying goes, if want it done right, do it yourself!!
