Assuming I currently get 17 MPG and gas is $3 per gallon, I can drive 1416 miles on $250.
If I get 19 MPG with this water injection device, I can drive 1583 miles on $250.
Question:
How many miles would I have to drive (at 19 MPG) to save an amount equal to the $250 price of this device, if the price of gas remained $3 per gallon?
Bonus Question:
How many gallons of gas (again, at 19 MPG) would it take to travel the miles required in the question above?
The answers to the two questions tell you exactly when the device starts to actually save you money.

Here's how it plays out:
$3 ÷ 17mpg = $.17647
$3 ÷ 19mpg = $.15789
$.17647 - $.15789 = $.01858 (the difference)
$250 ÷ $.01858 = 13,455.32831 miles
You would have to drive 13,455 miles.
13,455 miles ÷ 17mpg = 791.4898 gallons = $2,374.47
13,455 miles ÷ 19mpg = 708.175 gallons = $2,124.53
$2,374.47 - $2,124.53 = $249.94. Close enough.
So after spending $250 for the device, I would then still have to drive 13,455 miles and spend $2,124 on 708 gallons of gas for the device to save me enough money in gas to recoup the cost of the device.

For the $450 original cost, just substitute:
$450 ÷ $.01858 = 24,219.58 miles
You would have to drive 24,220 miles.
24,220 miles ÷ 17mpg = 1424.705 gallons = $4,274.11
24,220 miles ÷ 19mpg = 1274.74 gallons = $3824.21
$4,274.11 - $3,824.21 = $449.90. Again, close enough.
So after spending $450 for the device, you should have driven 24,220 miles and spent $3,824.21 on 1275 gallons of gas for the device to have saved you enough money in gas to recoup the cost of the device.

well thats not to bad people put over 13,000 miles on their vehicle in a year so i would pay for itself and in return save you $250 for every 13,000 miles you go right! thats not to bad

The first 13000 miles, it would be paying for itself, and beyond that, it would be saving the owner about $250 for every 13,000 miles they drive.
At $3 per gallon, that's 83 fewer gallons of gas used for every 13,000 miles travelled.

Now do that with the mileage that people are claiming with hybrids.
Its such a joke. If any of those cars got their advertised mileage, it would take anywhere from 50k to 100k miles to recoupe the cost of the hybrid option.
