Subject: 92 V8 runs rough-HELP IP: Logged
Message: My 92-w-200k+ miles on it is running rough & stumbling while riding down the road. It idles fine and even seems to be OK at WOT. It just kind of irradically stumbles/misses while cruising. I changed the O2, Temp sensors and have new wires, plugs, cap, rotor, PVC. Could it be ANOTHER pan gasket? Maybe a vacuum leak?

Message: That sounds a lot like what my '92 was doing, about 10 years ago. My mechanic said it was the distributor drive gear and bushing. The bushing wears out and allows the gear to float up and down, didn't do it under load, just cruising down the road. Common problem, he said, about a $300 fix back then. Still going, 240k on it right now.

Message: I will look at this-thanks. I wonder if the timing light would jump around due to this? It is easy enough to remove and inspect though. Did he have to go to the dealer for the part or is the dist available after market.

Message: I think he told me that the timing is set on the flywheel, not the distributor, but yes, the timing would float around as the gear moved. He said some of the factory gears were rough and wore into the bushings. He described a special tool used to install, and then ream the bushing. He borrowed the tool from the local Dodge dealership, said they didn't even know what it was for. I think mine went @ 130k.

Message: Thanks - I can get this tool. I have yet to find a mechanic that can do anything on any of my vehicles without me having to go back behind them. I try to do all my own vehicle repair but sometimes time does not allow it. Inevitably I'm taking it back to the stooge that "repaired" it. As we speak I have a Ford Van my wife drives that had the alternator/batteries replaced and it is discharging after less than 2 months.
