Subject: 46rh transmission rebuild IP: Logged
Message: Hi there !!
I have a dodge dakota 1996 4x4 with the 46re tranny and the 231dhd transfer case.
I seem to have a bit of a problem in rebuilding my tranny .
Thing is my overdrive piston retainer don't seem to want to go off the tranny shaft.I realy need it to go off in order to change the gasket kit just behind it(it has been dripping a bit of tranny oil since 1 month).
Question is do I have to take it off by the front of tranny or , by the back with a puller or some sort of a special tool.
Really need help here.

Message: There are 6 bolts holding it in place that can be reached from the rear, however, there's also a snap ring on the inside (the front three) that holds the thrust washer and the low-reverse drum in place.

Message: Nice !!!
So if i understand well , i need to:
Take off the tranny.
Then unfasten the snap ring somewhere on the front of the beast and the 6 bolts at the back of tranny.
Then pull off the intermediate shaft that would come off with the piston retainer by the back of the transmission.
Then take off the piston retainer by the front of the intermediate shaft.
Is that correct gen1dak?

Well, there's a little more to it than that. I'm taking it that the tranny is still in the truck?
Any way, once you get to the point of releasing the snap ring, you'll have basically taken every other retainer, snap ring, drum, and clutch out of the (front three's) guts. Once all the drums, etc have been released, the intermediate shaft will slide out from the rear (this is if you have already removed the overdrive section of the tranny). You can then remove the bolts that hold the retainer in place, and with a gentle tap with a soft mallet, it should slide out easily to the rear.
