Subject: Dakota Loses O/D When Warm IP: Logged
Message: Hi,
I have a 1999 Dakota 4x4 Sport with the 5.2 V8 and auto tranny. Just this week I have noticed that overdrive will not engage once the engine reaches operating temprature. I doubt its related to the engine, and would assume its when the tranny warms up.
I have checked the fluid level and it looks good, and clean.
I have read some recommendations for changing a number of sensors etc, but any firm advuce is appreciated before I start spending money & tearing the truck apart.

Message: So, to clarify, are you saying that the OD will engage with a cool engine, or it won't engage at all?

When the engine is cool, the auto tranny/overdrive work fine (1,500 rpm @ 80kmh). As soon as the engine reaches operating temprature the O/D will not kick in (approx 2,500 rpm @ 80 kmh).

Message: This is what I dont know.
It was serviced by the Dodge dealer I bought it from before I took delivery. Looking at the fluid, it looks clean and new, but I dont know what type/grade of fluid it is. All I know is that for the past 5 months its been fine, and now, all of a sudden, its not engaging O/D when warm.
I am pretty handy with the spanners, but I believe changing the tranny fluid in the Dakota involves dropping the pan as there is no drain plug, that sounds like a big job. But if I have to do it, I have to do it.
My main concern is that, if I have to drop the pan & change the fluid, what else should I change at the same time to make sure everything is OK? This is where I have heard about the sensors. Is it worth changing these out first, or doing the lot in one go?

Message: Since it's dropping out when warm it sounds like it's an overheat issue. Could be the anti-drainback checkball is stuck, wrong fluid, clogged filter, or a bad sensor.

Message: bad sensor most likely. and overheating tranny wouldnt last long at all and would probably be shot by now.

OPERATION
The PCM prevents engagement of the converter
clutch and overdrive clutch, when fluid temperature
is below approximately 10°C (50°F).
If fluid temperature exceeds 126°C (260°F), the
PCM causes a 4-3 downshift and engage the converter
clutch. Engagement is according to the third
gear converter clutch engagement schedule.
The overdrive OFF lamp in the instrument panel
illuminates when the shift back to third occurs. The
transmission will not allow fourth gear operation
until fluid temperature decreases to approximately
110°C (230°F).

Message: But I see no O/D Off lamp on the dash. It works as it will illuminate when I press the button on the shift lever.
I have tried Lucas Transmission Fix as a first line of attack. If that does not work I will try changing the tail shaft sensor. If thats a non-starter then its time for a visit to Mr Dodge Service man.

I have changed out the transmission fluid for ATF+4. I have changed the filter, removed the tail shaft speed sensor & cleaned the gunk off it.
The transmission pan was like new inside, with only a very thin layer of brown sludge in the bottom. There is no evidence of wear or degradation in the pan, the magnet was clean and I could not see any brass or other debris in the bottom. The fluid looked fine, maybe a little dark.
I have put the lot back together, new gaskets etc, replaced the fluid with Quaker State ATF+4 and added Lucas Transmission Fix.
The tranny appears to perform better, but the same symptoms occur. After the tranny warms up O/D will not engage. The only difference now is that it takes a little longer to happen and I get a Check Engine light when the O/D drops out!
Well, its a step forward I suppose!
Other than plugging it into a diagnostic computer, any ideas?

Message: I may be on to something. Since I have changed the fluid & filter things have greatly improved. Although the improvement was not immediate, I can now drive approx 100k and everything is just fine. Then the problem manifests itself again.
I am beginning to think its not an O/D not engaging issue (the O/D Off light does not come on), but rather an O/D slipping issue. I am going to spend some time making sure the fluid levels are bang on, and check for foaming. I am also going to make sure that the tranny fluid is cycling through the cooler, and the cooler flow is not blocked. I will also re-visit all the sensors I can get at and re-clean them.
As a last resort I will pay the local dodge dealer to recover the fault code. I hate paying main dealer prices!!!

Message: it sounds like it's either the govenor transducer sensor or solenoid. it will turn on check engine light and store a code if it acts up. try hooking up a scan tool to read the code if you can yourself. i've replaced dozens of these sensors at the dealership for this problem, its a somewhat common problem for this tranny. hope this helps.

Got the code - P0783 - 3 to 4 Shift Malfunction. I have to say its really helpful - not! The dealership rekon its a solonoid issue, and have quoted about $450 to replace them (parts & labour). I am still waiting for a price from another couple of garages. I will let you know what happens.

Message: Ha, sods law.
Took it to an independant today. He took it for a test drive and the Check Engine light came pn when he was driving. He pulled the codes and as well as the P0783, there was a P0740 (No RPM decrease when O/D solenoid engages). So, solenoids it appears to be. The local gug has quoted about $400 dead for the job, so I guess thats it sorted.
