Subject: Whine from engine bay IP: Logged
Message: My 4.7 Dak has had a whine coming from the engine bay since i picked it up. I had the dealer replace the power steering pump which lessened the noise but did not eliminate. It almost sounds like a mini blower... which would be awesome... if it actually had a blower.
None the less, I think it is coming from the valve train and is normal, but would like to know if everybody else has this sound from their 4.7
Thanks,
Blue

Message: I have a 2001 Dakota Quad with the 4.7 I have the same whine. Been there from day one, only have 3700 miles on it. Havent taken it to the dealer.
My brother in law is a Chrysler/Dodge Mechanic, has been for 25 years, I confided in him when making my decision on the 4.7. I will call him this weekend and ask him about this noise. I will let you know what he says.

Message: Get used to it. I have it for since day one also 14000 miles later still have it. It's from the air being sucked through the TB. I actually like it. Sounds like theres something under the hood. When I get enough money I will have something whining.

Message: Ya its the air going past the throttle plate,I think most all the 4.7`s do this and I noticed it more after installing a catback exhaust, also on the 4.7 throttle body I found a little leak where it mates to the intake, this will also give you that air sucking whine noise, just pull it off and seal with silicone

Message: Art - I don't think that it is air intake related. If I romp on it, i can hear is suck. That sound is at a lower frequency than the one I hear all of the time. It is difficult to explain, other than I would swear it sounds like gear driven timing. Maybe even a power steering pump noise, just not nearly as annoying.

Message: My 2001 5.9 had a whine when the AC was turned on.
I added a K&N FIPK, Holley TB, Gibson headers and cat back and the whine went away.

Message: I bought a left over 2002 Dodge Regular Cab 6 ft. bed with a 4.7 v8 and 3 miles on the odometer. I also have the whine since day 1. I now have 371 miles on the pickup truck. Sometimes it can be heard slightly louder more than other times but is not that annoying. It almost sounds like a power steering pump but of course it's not. I am glad that others are experiencing this as well. It leads me to believe that it is normal operation. One mechanical buddy of mine mentioned that the sound could be from the way the pulleys are set up but I have not investigated his suggestion further. Heck... I have a 7/70 bumper to bumper anyway. Let it die if it must.... but we all know.... DODGE LIVES FOREVER!!!! All hail Dodge!

Message: I just finished posting the previous message and decided to call Smith Haven Dodge's (NY) service department in Smithtown (631-863-2000 option 2 on the automated voice system). I asked about the whine and they said all 4.7's have it and that it is normal operation and that the power steering pump is designed to act in such a fashion.

Message: The only whine I hear is when the Tach is between 1.75 and 2. Then it is real loud (louder than the radio).
At first I thought it might be either intake noise (the stock intake is no longer attached to the wheel well) or old oil.
Well, the sound is not a whistling sound so I'm discounting the intake, and the oil just got changed to no effect.
It only occurs near 70MPH (Tach levels at 1.75 to 2)
Michael
P.S. - I'm gonna try to get a recording posted so you guys can hear it.

Message: Then again, if you still have the useless belt clutch/fan attached, robbing your engine of a few horses, for no good reason, it could be the old-noise from the clutch fan, especially when cold at or after start-up. And that's also normal. Those of us who have jettisoned this there needles, god for saken, belt clutch/fan on our 4.7's don't have this problem anymore, and the 200HP increase.
Oh, allright, maybe it's only a 2HP increase, but a free 2HP, IS 2HP! A 180 degree t-stat helps with this mod.

Message: I have a new 2003 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab. Occasionally it makes a whistling noise. Only occurs when the engine is cold (after sitting all night) but not consistently. 5 seconds or so in duration then stops. Not overly loud. After a minute or two it stops.
Anyone have or heard of a similar problem?
