Subject: Oil Pressure - too high?
IP: Logged

Message:
My oil pressure guage has two lines - after my last oil change, i noticed that the pressure gauge showed it was 'high' about 3/4 up the gauge. when idling it sits over the 1/2 even when running warm.

I was told i was being fussy and as long as it sits at that range all the time and there is no leaks, the oil is clean and service is done routinely, there is no problem.

I had my oil changed today, and still same- seems very high - am i just being a fuss?

No oil leaks that i can see, 4.7 l engine, 5 speed 4x4 Quad cab.

Depends on the year. Here's an extract from my 2004 FSM:

The instrument cluster circuitry restricts the oil pressure gauge needle operation in order to provide readings that are consistent with customer expectations. Each time the cluster receives a message from the PCM indicating the engine oil pressure is between about 6.9 kPa (1 psi) and 137.9 kPa (20 psi), the cluster holds the gauge needle at a point about 11 degrees above the low end of normal increment on the gauge scale. Each time the cluster receives a message from the PCM indicating the engine oil pressure is between about 517.1 kPa (75 psi) and 755 kPa (109.5 psi), the cluster holds the gauge needle at a point about 7.4 degrees below the high end of normal increment on the gauge scale. When the cluster receives messages from the PCM indicating the engine oil pressure is between about 137.9 kPa (20 psi) and 517.1 kPa (75 psi), the gauge needle is moved to the actual relative pressure position on the gauge scale.

On my '04 dakota, none of my instrument cluster gauges are positioned directly by sensors or senders. They are ALL positioned by the PCM.
