Subject: differential fluid?
IP: Logged

Message:
Thanks to everyone who replied to my last post about changing fluid in my transfer case. Got the job done this past weekend.

Now I want to change out my differentials fluid and might use full synthetic gear oil.

Does anyone know how many miles/time you can get before having to change out fluid in your diffs when using synthetic gear oil?

Thanks!

2000 4.7 liter 4WD with 49000 miles.

I have 150,000 on mine and only done it twice (with regular oil not synthetic). Only recently just did it and the oil from last time was pretty clean.

It is an easy job though, get one of those tools that draw out the fluid with a plastic tube (cheap). Put in new fluid and the limited slip additive.

Probably quicker than motor oil and filter change.

I use royal purple in everything.Motor, rear end, etc. They tested royal purple on a 5 speed dakota.Put it in the trans, engine, diff. They gained almost 10 HP at the rear tires. And improved gas miliage.

jerry, just curious if you got an owners manual and maint. manual with the truck. It tells you intervals, wieghts, and specific fluids for your truck. If you didn't, the diff's should be done every 30,000 miles with gear oil.

Steering off topic a bit...

My Haynes manual says to change it every 60,000 miles unless you operated under one of these conditions (which then requires changing it every 15,000 miles):

-in heavy city traffic where the outside temperature regularly reaches 90 degrees or higher
-in hilly or mountainous terrain
-frequent trailer towing
-if the vehicle has been driven through deep water

Checked my Dakota service manual (the big orange manual)

If you drive under schedule A normal conditions, there is no mention of diff fluid changes, just the transfer case every 37500 miles.

If you drive under schedule B, dusty, hot conditions, towing...the book says to change diff fluids every 12000 miles and the transfer case every 36000 miles.

Kind of confusing not to change diff fluid at all if you are under schedule A?
