Message: clogged or collapsed oil filter
clogged oil pump pick up screen
bad sending unit
pull the sending unit off
get a mech, gauge on it
see if the pressure really is low
if the mech. gauge reads good replace the sending unit
if not start with the oil filter
(try changing it)
if that doesnt help
your going to have to drop the pan
I'm sure you know not to drive or run the truck
un-till you check things out?

Message: ok so an update there is a ticking commin from the valves it could be from bad gas. my question is where should the gauge read at idle because it sets at the lowest line until you hit the throttle then it picks up. thanks for any input

Message: this may be for the 4.7 also but, the FSM states for the 3.9/5.2/5.9 -
oil pressure with engine at operating temp-
idle - 6psi minimum. 3000rpm - 30-80psi

Message: ok so the pump seems to do its job but when the oil comes to operating tempature the pressure stays on the bottm white line and doesnt move until the engine is around 3500 to 4000.

Message: Jake
Have you run any cleaner thru the crankcase? (Seafoam, or similar)
I do this every couple of oil changes.
My truck is '01 4.7L 4X4 Autotrans
At operating temp the oil pressure sits at a low level during idle and jumps up to about 7/8 of the gage when traveling at common road speeds.
Most 4.7L I've run across have a tick in the engine, don't know if its serious or common problem. I've have not had any sludge problems and my truck runs like new still. I've got over 128,300 miles on it.

Message: I had the same problem. '01-4.7& all, Turned out to be the ECM. The voltage was all over the place and I was told that eventualy the ECM would/could start to do nasty things to other engine functions. Check the pressure with a mechanical ga. and read the voltageat the diagnostic port. Long story short...78k miles, Dodge replaced the ECM
...I'm happy again

Message: have you checked the pressure using a mechanical gage? it could be just the sending unit.
also, have you changed brands of oil and filter from what you were using previously?

Message: I had the same low pressure problem just out of my 7/70,000 warranty (70,741). I have a 2001 quad cab with the 4.7
I am a nut about changing my oil every 3,000 miles. (I just sold a 1990 Isuzu with 461,000 miles) Towed the vehicle to a 5-star dodge dealer who informed me I had sludge and had blown the engine. The head mechanic told me I had no compression.
Long story short, I had to pay almost 400.00 to get the vehicle out of the shop and unassembled. I didn't buy the diagnosis when the mechanic had only pulled the valve cover and didn't even check the oil pressure.
The head mechanic who told me I had no compression, told me he could get a new engine for 6400.00, but he just happened to know where he could get a used engine for 5600.00.
(yup, right under my hood!!)
My mechanic and I changed the oil pump, pickup tube and screen.
Today, true to form again, the oil guage hit bottom and I am going to change out the pump, pickup tube and screen. Mileage is 138,741; almost 70,000 since the last one. The dealer wanted over 1200.00, my mechanic is charging 492.00 including taxes, when I bring the parts costing 200.00.
Hint: google "dodge or chrysler oil sludge scam" and see if this story isn't familiar. Sometimes the engines aren't really locked up. Wonder why there aren't any new engines around and the ones you can get are at top dollar? This evaluation works really well on the elderly and single women.
The moral of the story is: Don't let your oil pump go past 70,000 miles or you may be left with an expensive paperweight or in debt with a new/used/rebuilt engine that will blow up. Replace the heart of the engine before it stops beating!!
