Subject: Ticking/Knocking with Superchips
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys,

Well I installed my superchips the other week, and now I have a ticking or knocking sound when under load. I have to run 91 octane gas on the 87 octane performance program because I get way too much ticking under load with the 91 performance setting.

I have tried the usual stuff to abade the ticking noises. I used Seafoam and installed new plugs, but its still happening.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, please let me know because I really want to use the 91 setting.

Oh yeah, I have an 02 4.7L, w/ HO cams.

are you runnning a 180 deg tstat? you may have to with that setup. anytime you can lower combustion chamber temp it will help with pinging.

No, I'm running the stock tstat. I might give that a try, but when I start my truck in the morning,(or whenever its been sitting and cold) I can't go past 3000 rpm because I get a very loud knocking until it warms up.

How should I go about fixing that. I looked into changing or cleaning my EGR valve, but I don't have one.

How much 91 fuel is in the tank? When I installed the Superchips on my 01 4.7 I couldn't resist the 91 Performance tune, but it pinged really bad since only 3/4 of the fuel int the tank was 91 octane. I ran the tank dry, refilled with 91 octane and most of the pinging stopped, but I still had some under heavy load conditions (full throttle passing). I backed down to the 91 tow program and the pinging is gone, even while towing 1000#. I just have to see how it does with pinging while towing the 3500# boat.

Off subject, but after installing the Superchips, HO cams, Magnaflow muffler, 180 degree thermostat and replacing air hat with ABS pipe,,, I increased fuel mileage by 1.5 MPG, the performance is much better also.

I have been running 91 for the past two weeks. But when I initially tried the 91 setting, I believe there was about a 16th of a tank that had 89 at the time, but like I said, there has been only 91 the last two weeks, so when I get home tonight, I will try the 91 towing.

Thanks for the help DSW and Daddio! You guys rock!

I'll let you know tomorrow if I have any improvements.

And good job on the mileage gain DSW. Now I have more proof for my wife that aftermarket performance adders can give better gas mileage.

Try different brands of gas (top tier) I found the only one that works for me is 76.

You know sarge, its funny that you said that, because last night, my truck was ticking a little with the 91 towing (thanks again DSW) on the way to Costco. Well I got gas at Costco and on the way home and this morning's drive to work, I heard no ticking at all. FINALLY!

Tonight I'll try to put the regular 91 performance setting on and see if it still ticks.

On a side note, I sold my turbo yesterday. I bought the wrong size and now I can get the right one. Thanks to Rammer and Graphitedak, I know which size to get now. I haven't seen either one of those guys on here lately, but I still want to see Rammers turbo 360 Ram.

I should have my turbo setup installed by November.

Thanks again for all of the help guys.

Bad news dudes, its still ticking. I've got it on 91 towing with 91 octane and I'm still getting that strange ticking noise.

Do you guys think that one of my intake manifold gaskets could be broken?
Because I can't figure out what the hell is wrong.

highly unlikely on a 4.7. no bellypan gasket. you could get a vacuumm gage and check the vacuumm with the engine warm @ idle should be right at 20"Hg vacuumm.

if you haven't changed the tstat yet, i'd do that.

but is it really pinging or is it just a ticking?

I think its just ticking, but it only does it under load. I will change the thermostat this weekend to see if it helps any.

"Try a step colder on the plugs."

Its weird that you said that Shoe, because I changed the plugs recently with the stock Autolite 5224's. I have a set of 3923's that I will put in this weekend.

The weird part about all of this is, before I got my Superchips, my truck was ticking with regular 87 octane at highway speeds and anytime I gave it gas without my auto tranny down shifting. At the time I had the Autolite 3923's in and I couldn't figure out why it was ticking.

Now its just as bad but seems to happen more often with the A/C on.

Ticking under load is often pinging. More load, even from AC, could make a difference. With the extra advance I run, I had to run premium for towing with the stock 3.55 gear. Now, with the motor seeing a lower load with 4.10 gears, I can pull that same load with regular. Take it easy while trying to sort this out, so you don't hurt the motor. Another thing to check would be a different gas station; sometimes product other than premium could end up in that tank.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Ok, then I got the ping.

I've used a few different gas stations lately and used nothing but 91 for the past few weeks. So I'm not sure where the problem could be coming from.

Do you guys think this could be carbon knock?

Just a thought but is it possible that when you intalled the HO cams that mabye you got them a tooth or to off. This could mess with the timing and cause it to ping if the timing was off a little, then by installing the superchips it was advanced even more making it more noticible. If I read the post from earlier today at 12:55 right you said the truck did this before you installed the superchip right? So I would check the timing marks again. Just my thoughts on it.

i'm not sure how the 4.7's are set up but shadetree could have something there.

and yes carbon buildup can cause pinging. using some Seafoam, GM Top engine Cleaner or water(if you know how to do it) can help remove that carbon buildup.

The 4.7 is an interference engine, meaning if his cams were off by more than a tooth or so its more possible that his valves would be bent. A tooth on a timing chain is a long way to be off on a camshaft, it probably wouldn't start or if it did it wouldn't run good.

However the GM top engine cleaner that daddio suggested is really, really good stuff, its not anything like the fuel injector cleaners that you get at NAPA or Autozone, it actually works. I'm not exactly sure how much it costs, but if its carbon causing it that stuff will get rid of it. It says on the label not to use it in the gas tank but it will be fine so long as you have a full tank of gas to dilute it a little, thats how we used it at the Chevy dealer that I worked at sometimes. We would only use the special tool if the test fitting on the fuel rail was easy to get to.

Shadetree,
Yeah, my truck was pinging before I got my superchips, but it didn't start pinging until I got to around 105k miles. I currently have 126k miles and installed the HO cams at around 55k. So I don't think its the cams, but I will definitely check this weekend.

Daddio,
I seafoamed the crap out of my engine 3 times already. Initially, I put it in the tank, engine oil, and through it while it was running. Since then I've done it twice more with no change.

I'd like to try the water but am not sure how to do it. I just spray it into the throttle body while the engine is warm and running right?

Damnit! I changed the plugs last night to 3923's and while it did help, the ping still persists.

Kota kid was right about the cam problems, when I initially installed my cams, I screwed up the passenger side by a few teeth. Truck would not start at all. (technically, when I installed the camshaft, I didn't line up the dowel with the cog wheel and when I tightened the cog wheel on there, it pushed the dowel into the camshaft.)

But still my pinging lives on. I'm going to try the GM cleaner tonight perhaps. Anyone know where I can get it? And how do I apply to the engine? Same way as seafoam?

any GM dealer ought to have it. it's available in liquid or aerosol. not sure how you use it but you should just follow the directions.

have you changed the tstat yet? if the cleaner doesn't help i'd change that tstat.

Have you tried it back on the 87 octane setting?

And I think what you are having is predetonation, or Pinging.
