Subject: Emmisions Light??? IP: Logged
Message: My emmisions light has come on I went to my regular mechanic and he read the code and cleared it out but it has come back on. The gas cap is tight so its not that. Could my gas cap be bad and not getting a good seal? My mechanic said dodges are known for there fuel system warning lights to come on. I cant get my truck inspected until I get it fixed and I really dont want to have to take it to the dealership!!! Any help would be great.....

Message: it's probaly one of the rubber hoses coming off of the evap canister under the drivers side of the cab in fron tof the fuel tank. check for cracks. it could be a bad gas cap also. but doubt it. you can get codes read at Autozone for free. you can replace that rubber hose with the same size fuel line you can buy at the parts house.
oh, your mechanic says that dodge is know for the fuel system warning lights coming on huh? but he couldn't tell you what was wrong? i'd find another mechanic.

Message: You can read the code yourself. The only way to know how to fix it is to know the code(s).
Your "mechanic" didn't do you any favors by just clearing the code and not telling you what it meant.
Key in ignition switch.
ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON (without starting the engine) and look at the odometer readout. It will show all the codes. Write them down and let us know what they are so we can help you.

Message: I got it p 0442 is the code. Damn thats a cool trick to be able to read the codes like that. Do all car companys do that? You guys kick ass for helping me!!!

Message: "Do all car companys do that?" no, unfortunately for us DYI'ers. P0442 from memory, is a Small leak detected in the Evap Emmission Sys detected. did you check those hoses as i suggested?

Message: I checked the hoses around the eavp canister and fuel tank. There werent any cracks that I could see or feel. Would I be able to see or feel them? The code 0442 reads in the manual as a "evap control system, small leak". Is there a sensor in the evap canister that has just gone bad? Can only a dealership fix this?

underhood, check the hoses around the green test cap. also, i guess if you could pressurize that system with some smoke, you'd see the leak for sure.

Message: P0442 is usually attributed to a gas cap that is loose, or not sealing well; i.e. leaking rubber ring on the cap.
Other causes could be evap system hose crack or split, as mentioned.
The FSM lists those checks first, and if those checks don't find anything, a test with an Evaporative Emission Leak Detector, which is a fancy pressure tester/smoke machine. It requires a trip to the dealer$hip.
Could be the evap purge solenoid, or a hose connection there. You can find it easily. Go to your engine compartment and find the throttle body. Over on the driver side, there will be two connectors (idle air bypass on the bottom, throttle position sensor above it), and a rubber hose above them both. Follow that hose. It connects the purge solenoid to the intake system. Check that the connector to the purge solenoid is properly seated. While you're there, might as well check the condition of those hoses that connect to the purge solenoid - they're subject to effects of engine heat.
Some other threads on this subject have noted that a new gas cap sometimes fixed the problem, and that's certainly cheaper than a trip to the dealer$hip for a leak detector session, so if all else fails, try a new gas cap first. If you get a new cap, make sure you get the right one. Some caps screw on and some are "bayonet" style.
-----
After you think you've found the source of the problem, you can reset the Check Engine Light yourself.
Disconnect battery.
Foot on brake pedal, turn key to START, and hold for about 10 seconds. This discharges the capacitors that cause the PCM to retain its temporary memory.
Reconnect battery.
-----
IMPORTANT INFO
Start 'er up and just let it idle for a minute or two. The reason you should let it idle for a while after this method is that you have just erased all the "adaptives" that stored your driving style, transmission shift settings, etc, and reset them to baseline. Letting it idle helps it relearn a few things about your engine before you take off down the road.
You have also blanked out all the emmission test indicators in the PCM (road time is definitely required to get them to "ready" state if your local emissions inspections include plugging in to the OBDII data port).
A minute or so of idling will possibly give the purge system time to go through its self-checks, to see if the Check Engine Light comes back on, or it may need a bit of road time for the complete evap system check.
Good luck.

One more thing.
If your '03 is configured same as my '04, the evap canister will be on the driver's side, inside the frame rail just forward of the gas tank. If you haven't done so, check all those hoses to and from the canister for cracks, splits, abrasion and a good solid connection. If any hoses feel loose, or if any of them can be unplugged easily, consider some appropriately sized hose clamps to keep them secure.

Message: if you fix the problem you don't necessarily need to reset the pcm to turn that CEL off. it will go out after a couple of start/run/stop cycles.

Message: Yeah. I thought of that, too.
But I figured for quick troubleshooting, it's sometimes better to turn off the light and see if it comes back on, which could take seconds to minutes, rather than leave it on and wonder if it's ever going to go off while it completes the required number of drive cycles, which could take days, and all the while not really knowing if the problem is fixed.

Message: don't go to the dealer to buy that hose. they'll probaly charge you 15 bucks. you can bring that piece to the parts house and buy some fuel line the same size for 2 or 3 bucks.

Message: I have a 2007 dodge dakota. The emmission light came on. There are times when it would come on for a bit, meaning a drive from home to work which is a three mile drive. then as it sits while i am at work, and when I go home, the light is off. Now today 8/20/13, it came on and now is blinking. It is effecting the power. Could this be my Catalylac Converter?
