Subject: Rebuilt 4.7L engine IP: Logged
Message: Hi, I just finished rebuilding my engine for my '01 Dakota QC 4.7 due to gobs and gobs of sludge in the heads. (bought it used in '05) It seems to run great now, but there's a little ticking sound that seems to be coming from under the valve covers. Does anyone know if this is a normal sound for a newly rebuilt engine? This is my first time rebuilding an engine so not sure of the sounds they might make. The book did say that there might be some noise once you first start it up, but should go away after about 5 to 15 minutes. Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Don

Message: No, I got the heads from the dealer (a buddy is a mech there and got me a hell of a deal on them). So, the only thing I had to put in were the cams and rockers.

Message: A slight ticking is normal but if its excessive or only coming from one side you may have a dead lash adjuster. I tried a KRC suggestion of putting a #10 washer under each adjuster to pre-load them but it still ticked with bigger cams. They all do it. I have had two 4.7L trucks and a 3.7L Jeep, all 3 have audible ticking, esp at start up. 10W-30 in warm months will help.

Message: It's coming from both sides. I am still in the 500-600 mile break-in period and a few people have said to wait until after that to see if it goes away. I just don't want to risk anymore damage to it. Will bad / dead lash adjusters cause severe damage? I'm in colorado, and am using 5w30 now, but might change to 10w30 next.

Message: Don-I have had my 4.7 QC since 2002. It has made that noise since I bought it. My cousin (who is a Dodge tech.) says all the 4.7s do this. I have put over a 100.000 miles on my truck using Castrol syntec 5w 30 and the fram duo guard filter. I race my truck at the mud bog on a regular basis and have not had a single problem with my engine. Love my Dak!! Planning on getting another!!! I don't think having two 4.7s in the stable would be a bad thing.

Message: Don,
Sorry to hear you had to rebuild your 01. My 2001 QC, 4.7, manual, etc. has ~125,000 miles, Mobil 1 since 3,000, and runs EXCELLENT!!
As you said though, you bought a used one.
Maybe we should be pulling valve covers when we buy used! I know mine would sparkle, it did with the HO cams ~22,000 miles.
I hope you figure out the ticking, I never hear mine doing it.

Message: Texastodd-Not even on startup? I don't think I have ever heard a 4.7 NOT tick a little on cold starts. Not even the brand new one I test drove last week!!! Although, I gotta say. I was only test driving it for a performance comparison. I don't particularly care for the looks of the newest model Dak.........but, you know what they say, opinions are like a$$holes!!!

Message: No, never. Is this when you're in the drivers seat? Window down? Or opening the hood?
I change the Mobil 1 usually every 5-7K, no probs so far.

Message: Any way you start it. It isn't quite as audible when you are in the truck and the windows are up. I use Castrol Syntec and the fram Duo-Guard oil filter, changing them every four to six thousand miles. Do you think maybe your lash adjusters are to tight? I'm telling you, man. Every Dodge tech I know says it is normal for these engines to make some noise. I worked at BMW and we always had customers coming in saying that there engines were noisy on start up. This is due to the lash adjusters being set up correctly. I am not sure about the 4.7 as I have just finished paying my truck off, consequently, meaning I am just now starting to figure out how I am going to go about getting more ponies freed up. Have you heard anything about the IAT adjusters they are selling on Ebay? Do you know if they work or are they another one og them products that the PCM learns around? I have been trying to get info on this for a few weeks now and it seems as if this info is some top secret stuff. Who knows??
