Subject: Oil Filters? IP: Logged
Message: I use Mobil 1 5/30 full syn. oil in my 2000 4.7 liter Dakota.
I was in Autozone today picking up an oil filter for my upcoming oil change.
There were STP, Bosch, Mobil-1, K&N, Fram brands.
I went with the Fram double guard filter.
I know there are a lot of opinions on oil, but what about filters? Is there really a big difference, or will all the brands do about the same?
Thanks and Happy Labor Day!

Message: somewhere theres a web site written by a guy who decided to tear apart a bunch of oil filters and see how they're made. I'm sure a google search will find it.
The bottom line is that the Fram filters are about the worst. Purolater Pro-1 (the blue one) is about the best.

Message: some of the new fram filters have metal elements inside, not just cardboard stuff.
check out their website.
a couple things to keep in mind for oil filters
filter and flow
how small of particles will it filter, the smaller the more it cleans from the oil.
the rate at which oil can pass through.

Message: Smallest particle filtered in µ(microns).
Size (area) of filter medium in square inches
New filter flow rate at 100°C (operating temp) oil temp for:
xW-20, xW-30, xW-40.
Bypass valve opening differential pressure
If only manufacturers would put that kind of info on the filter package, we could all make smarter, more informed choices about the oil filters we buy, and the crap filters would fade away.

Message: I only use the Fram duo-guard. It has a teflon additive that is really good for your engine. I have only used Fram oil filters for my entire life. I am 32 and have owned hundreds of cars. (I grew up in a family owned salvage yard.) Mobil1 is by far the best oil but, I use the Castrol Syntec (Synthetic/conventional blend) and change my oil about every 6000 miles. I have 172,000 on My 4.7 and still take second place at the mud bog every week. The mobil1 is just to expensive.

Message: guys: ever since I saw a show on the discovery channel called (how its made)they stated that all oil filters were manufactured in the same place then shipped to the different companies for lable printing and sales. Thats why I would buy the economical ones, like the wal-mart brand. I guess one can't believe everything we see on t.v.right?

Message: You'd be amazed how much lighter a fram filter is comparing with known good quality filters. WYLMAN,.....Most of us do what we believe to be best for our engines.Teflon has been tested and retested and it is NOT GOOD for any engine and does not coat moving parts as specified. It will settle in areas where you don't want it such as oil passages. I seem to recall lawsuits about the advertising.I'm not condemning you for your practices here. Just wondering where you got your information.

That was a FRAM factory on the Discovery Channel show. Like many manufacturers, Fram makes products for other companies, who have their own printing done on the can so they can sell them as their own.
Fram does not make ALL oil filters, as wilkyw seems to believe.
Go to the site that LOOKY posted. Not much to it, except that it speaks volumes on how different manufacturers make oil filters. Check out the three filters on the right. That's Fram engineering.
Now go to the site that OilFilterTest posted.
Read. Pay attention. Learn. Good info, if a little dated.

Message: Just some info- I use the FL1-A motorcraft, a good filter and is longer than the called for filter. Fits right in and holds a full quart instead of the factory half quart. I change the M-1 and filter every 6000 miles. the 4.7 is smooth and clean after 70,000 miles.

Message: the NAPA Gold oil filter line is rated pretty good,
all the following have the same specs except
for capacity/length and fit the 4.7l engine:
#1085, 3.8 inches long (stock filter)
#1515, 5.2 inches long (same as Motorcraft FL1-A)
#1773, 7.0 inches long (1 quart capacity, but requires trimming
of the plastic drain 'chute' on some engines (like my RAM 1500)
I've been using the 1773 for the last few years,
adds extra filter material capacity for long drain
intervals plus increases overall oil quantity result: the oil stays clean longer.
(Redline 5W30 every 6K to 8K miles/ or 6 months)

Message: As FYI stated, the Motorcraft FL-1A is an excellent quality filter, and is larger than that puny OEM thing.
I prefer the WIX 51773, or NAPA 1773(made by WIX) on my 2004 4.7L engine. That 7"-long mother fits right up there.
For those 4.7L owners out there you who enjoy the longer oil change intervals of synthetic oil, but are still using the tiny OEM-sized filter, try a step up to the FL-1A or that monster 1773 filter.
I don't know if these larger filters fit the '05 und newer 4.7L Dakotas. Haven't seen their setup.

Quote from another thread on the same subject by DanK: http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v8/4255.html
"When it comes to oil filters, bigger is better, in my opinion.
I use Wix 51773 (or Fram PH977 or Motorcraft FL-299) oil filters on my 4.7L Dakota, and wife's 4.7L Jeep GC. Same diameter, thread and gasket size as OEM, but this monster is almost 7" long. Fits just fine. Increased oil capacity more than a quart, which I also think is a good thing.
I think I've found an even larger filter that may fit: Wix 51714 (or Napa 1714) that's also a larger diameter. "
-----------
I looked into the 1714 filter, and yes, it would fit right up there on the 4.7L, if there was more clearance with the block. It's too wide.

Message: While looking for high capacity filters you should also look at the micron rating of the filter, not only the added oil capacity.
I'm using Wix 51515 (FL1A) filters on my 4.7 which have a 19 micron rating, when compared to the smaller OEM equivalent Wix 51085 filter which has a 20 micron rating, the FL1A is good choice.
While the Wix 51773 is probably 2 times the capacity of the OEM filter, it only filters down to 30 microns, probably not a good choice.

Message: oil filter testing sort of looks like this:
(not actual numbers from filters mentionned above)
40 Micron: 100%
30 Micron: 100%
25 Micron: 100%
20 Micron: 99.9%
15 Micron: 99.2%
10 Micron: 92.8%
5 Micron: 51.3%
I can live with a 1773 even if it's perhaps 1-2% not as efficient in the 20 Micron range.

Message: the rating is not the smallest particle it will filter out
but the smallest particle it can 100% filter out
particles smaller than the nominal rating will pass thru at a higher percentage, like the chart example shows.

Message: Wal-Mart now sells the OEM Mopar filter in my area for less than $5.00. How does this filter compare to the WIX and Napa filters that are evidently the "better" filters? Also 10W30 Mobil 1 is the same price as the Castrol Syntec at my local walmart. Not pushing wal-**** but where do you guys live that the Mobil One is so expensive?
