Subject: 4.7L Exhaust. Magnaflow or Flowmaster?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys! I know this has probably been gone over a million times but I did not find the exact answer I was looking for when I did a search. I'm about to buy my dad's '03 Dakota 4.7 from him. I love this truck. The only thing I want is a louder exhaust. I know, but I'm 19 so that explains it all right there! Anyway, I want a single in dual out muffler with 4" tips that are 45 degrees behind the rear axle. My first question is what size pipe to use. Do I do a 3" in and dual 2.5" out, or what? I don't even know what the stock size pipe size is. Also, I'm trying to decide betweena Flowmaster origional 40 or the 14" Magnaflow. I had a FM 40 on my last truck and as I got used to it,it was really quiet. I know Dodges are louder than Chevys to begin with, but I want something a little louder that does not have any raspyness or pop to it like I would assume a glasspack would. I want a deep throaty V8 sound with no snap crackle pop. I don't mind any interior drone. Any suggestions would be great. I love this site already. Thanks!

I had the exact setup you are talking about on my 02 4.7, Flowmaster 40 series, 3in from the cat to the muffler and then 2.5in out the back. All I can say is wow, did it sound good! I'm about to put dual Flowmasters back on it to get it sounding as good as it used too. The only reason I removed it in the first place is because I installed a true dual setup that came with mufflers as part of the kit. Its a lot louder now but doesn't sound as good. As far as Magnaflow goes I know there are a lot of Magnaflow fans on this site but, all they are really is a fancy oval shaped glasspack. I think they sound too raspy and not nearly loud enough.

Thanks Kota Kid. Did you notice any loss in low end torque or back pressure? I am probably going to just stick with a single in dual out muffler. Does anyone know if it'll be louder the closer the muffler is to the cat?

I myself am fond of the dynomax exhaust for the 4.7. (you can actually go to their website and hear it, before you buy it.) I don't know what style your truck is but, Advance Auto has the best prices on the Dynomax exhaust kits and it only takes them about 3 days to get it in. Hope this helps you out.

When I switched to the true dual setup thats on the truck now I did loose some of the low end grunt but made up for it from 3500rpm up. I don't think it will be any louder or quieter closer to the cat, however it would be quite a bit louder with the cat gutted. Not to sure if your local emissions laws would appreciate it though.

I'll look into Dynomax. I had a Bullet once, but that's all I really know about them. My local emissions are pretty tough around here. I might be able to get away with a more free flowing cat, but even that is a stretch.

That sucks.

I have had really good luck with Dynomax exhaust systems too, but have never found one loud enough to buy for myself though.

If your emission laws are that strict. BE CAREFUL!!!! No Dak came from the factory with true duals and therefore, will not pass inspection with true duals. Stupid ass law but, they make them. Dynomax has afree flowing cat that they sell for the one into two Daks that they claim is emissions legal nationwide. GOod luck!!!

If I decided to go with true duals (which is VERY unlikely due to money) I have to have two seperate cats (one infront of each muffler) for it to be legal. All of a sudden my little exhaust project would have turned into big bucks. That's why I'm leaning towards the SI/DO mufflers. I'm just looking for sounds. Performance and MPG gains don't really bother me, as long as I don't loose anything.

That's cool that you can go with the two cats. Here in NC you cannot. If it never came from the factory with duals....you cannot have duals. It is like that in quite a few states. I know of NC and RI because I am a certified inspector in both states. You really don't gain much with true duals anyway, unless you X pipe them.

I live just north of NC in VA and go to the outer banks regularly to ride on the beach and have seen every thing from VW Beetles on Blazer frames running 35s or bigger and headers sticking out of what little hood is left or straight out the sides through the fenders, to untold numbers of Superduty's with stacks coming through the bed, and even a Chevy K30 with 54in Swamper Boggers driving down the road RUNNING RACING FUEL (there is no mistaking that wonderfull smell) all with Carolina plates. I don't think they are that strict at all in NC. It could be worse anyway, in Maryland stock 4wd Toyota Tacomas won't pass inspection without mudflaps.

I didn't say there wasn't some of us who know how to get around the laws........We just have very strict laws. I have put Fox Bodies (Mustangs and Pintos.) on Bronco frames and passed inspection. I have run Foxes with no exhaust at all. I grew up in a junkyard and also have an inspection license. BUT....those are all non emission vehicles. The Daks are now emission tested vehicles....somewhat. They have to be plugged in and pass a systems check with the key off and the key on as well. If you didn't know someone who would let you slide with atrue dual system in NC, You would fail when they seen it set up like that. Sad, but true. If you go to the Outer Banks alot, you might end up seeing me when Dennis Anderson (Gravedigger) gets his mud bog opened up. I will probably be going up there quite often to race.

I'm not quite sure where. Somewhere close to his shop I would presume. My buddy who has abotu 2million worth of A mod mud rails has been talking about it. He said he is going to quit running at our local track and start going up there when it gets up and running. I have been trying to find a website on it but, have come up short. I will go talk to my boy and see if he can't give me a little more info on it and then I will let you know. Hopefully, I will see you there!!!

I'm Just glad VA hasn't started that emissions BS yet, knock on wood. I don't want to put a cat back on my 99 4x4 she sounds too good now with a Flowmaster 40 series and no cat.

It's coming bro. You know what they say, look at whatever is happening in Cali. It's only a matter of time before it spreads to the rest of the nation. It's to bad the nation wouldn't adopt SC's NO inspection policy. Then we could do to our trucks whatever we desired and no one would say boo about it. I'm gonna go by my bro's in alittle bit. I let you know what the deal is with Anderson's bog as soon as I get back.

I'm pretty sure that I've decided on a single in, dual out FM Origional 40 with 4" tips. I hope this thing is screaming loud and sounds good. Now my last question, what size pipe should i use from the muffler back for duals. 2.25 or 2.5? I don't want to loose any low end power.

That's funny, my 01, 4.7 Quad cab, has a cat on each header, and HAD a third one after the Y, without any sensors.

Somehow, my third cat is missing, ( ;-) ) and it passes the OBD port inspection, no codes, etc.

When I go to true duals, (soon, costom fab), it will start just after the cats on the headers, hence, no codes, and passes inspection.

Good luck

texastodd- I didn't think of trying to do that!!! You are right though, there are the two up top. Holy sheep doodoo!!! You ran a muffler on each pipe as well, huh? How about an x-pipe or some type of crossover? Did you have it dynoed to see iof it actually helped or hurt your performance?

I hope 4 inch tips is a typo. It would look pretty silly on anything other than a diesel 3/4 or 1 ton. 3 inch tips and 2.5 inch pipe is fine.

I had Magnaflow 15877 with 3 inch pipes out the rear. The muffler was 18 inches. Sound was perfect. Nice deep rumble at idle, good gurgling growl on accelaration, and howled at full throttle. However there was drone in certain light throttle/moderate load conditions.

I then had the pipes rerouted to go behind the tires at a 45 degree angle and put a 14 inch dynomax superturbo in place of the 18 inch magnaflow. The dynomax is louder and deeper when you want to hear it but quieter than the magnaflow when you don't and it's a nearly zero drone muffler. And it also has a lifetime warranty as opposed to the Magnaflow's five years. So I assume even though the dynomax is aluminum as opposed to stainless they must do something to it that they're willing to stand behind it like that.

Plus... I lost a little low end when I went to the Magnaflow and got some back when I switched to dynomax. These 4.7s only do well with decreased backpressure up to a point. After that what you find when you have too little restriction is that the motor makes more hp at higher RPMs when it gulps air more easily. However you loose low end torque because the exhaust gas pulse don't get pushed through larger diameter tubing as easily.

Some will say the dynomax superturbo line is a little quiet for their tastes but most people who say this have used 18, 20 inch, or longer-shell models. I have the 14 and it's plenty loud for me.

I hear Flows are good for sound but not necessarily power but don't have personal experience so I can't say for sure.

The actual best for torque and horsepower is single/in, single out with 3 inch pipe. Second best is SI/DO with no bigger than 2.5 inch pipes and a straight through muffler.

True duals and straight pipes seem to rob people of torque unless they go on trucks with really big, high displacement motors and/or other performance mods.
