Subject: interchangeability? IP: Logged
Message: I have a '96 Dak 4x4 with a 5.2, and I was wondering if any later year 5.2 would be a direct replacement? Would the other engine have to come out of a truck that had the same trans, or would that not matter?

Message: Hmmm...no takers? Let me try and clear up what I'm asking...My '96 5.2 has 147,000 miles on it, and although it still runs well, it is starting to show its age (especially since the most the last owner ever did for it was have the oil changed occasionally). I am looking for a replacement motor to put in. Now, if I get a 5.2 that's model year '97-'00, could I still use the computer from the '96 on the later model-year engine? They do have all the same sensors and whatnot...right?

Message: i believe you are correct. '96-'04 maybe '05 should all be OBDII. find a suitable donor engine and swap it in there. i don't know if they changed any sensor connectors through the years but you could reuse all the senorsa from the old engine.
what makes you think she a little tired? these engines usually go 200k & beyond with no problems.

Message: It could just be sludge built up robbing performance and fuel economy.
It's common especially if the oil was not changed regularly and dino oil was used.
I had it in my old 95 3.9 and i did change the oil.

Message: Thanks everyone for the replies...Now, I have read on numerous threads on here that the 5.2 is incredible when it comes to longevity. There are a couple things that make me worry about my engine. First, when the intake plenum gasket had blown apart, oil went through and coated the ENTIRE intake and heads. After I finally replaced that, I changed the oil and noiced an inordinate amount of oil at the bottom half of the bellhousing and the surrounding areas. I though that it was the rear main seal, but I took a quick peek behind the engine and I think that the oil leak is in the top half of the engine (head gasket?). Also, going by the fact that the previous owner didn't take care of it whatsoever, I am frightened by how badly the internals are worn. BTW, when I got the truck, there was NO oil on the dipstick(!), and when asked how long it had been like that, the guy just smiled and shrugged his shoulders.

Message: Sounds like that truck had a rough life before you got it. What possesed you to buy a truck from a man that smiled at you when asked about a low reading on the dipstick? I hope you got the truck for a song and a dance!! Anyway, unless it is a daily driver, why not pull the top end apart and see what you got. That should give you an indication of wether or not it is a candidate for rebuilding or not. Either that, or go with a direct bolt in Jasper remanufactured engine.

Message: The "guy" is my brother-in-law and he and my sis wanted a newer vehicle with better mpg. My dad found a good deal on one and told my sis about it. She said they'd buy it if they didn't have this truck. I happened to be there and said that I would buy it from them. At this time, I had a '92 ford taurus, and this truck had nearly everything that I swore would be in my next vehicle...a V8 and RWD (would've liked a manual instead, but beggars can't be choosey!) I was only 20 at the time and had a crappy low-paying job. So whenever they said $1000 would be sufficient, I jumped at the chance, seeing as it had only 109,000 mi. and was only ~7yrs old. I am still EXTREMELY EXTREMELY happy and thankful for the purchase, but I know that with even minimal effort by my bro-in-law, this truck would still be in all-around top-notch condition. Oh, and it is a daily driver, so tearing it apart for more than a weekend is a no-go. However, I am building a 360 to put in another 'kota, so whenever that is finally done, I will be able to tear into this engine fully...if I still have this engine, that is!

Message: your leak at the rear of the engine may just be the oil press. sending unit.
if you're worried about internal wear because of mistreatment just hook up a mechanical oil press. gage and see what you get. that will tell how worn it really is.

Message: the leak at the rear of the engine is 99.9% going to be the rear gasket for the intake manifold when you swapped out your plenum gasket. was it a cork gasket? i had the same problem i had my intake manifold replaced at the dealership (warranty).
stock plenum gaskets dont last much past 75K miles, if that long. once they go, they can make a mess of a nice manifold.
as for your original question, any magnum 5.2 will work from 92+. You'll just have to use your stock intake/fuel system.

Message: A running Dakota for $1000? You did get it for a song and a dance!! Have you done a compression test?? Drive it until the other one is running, then tear it apart and see what you got. Nothing like having two Daks!!! I will be looking for a second one soon myself. I just finished paying my 2000 4.7 4x4 qc sport off. Now I want a regular cap, 2x4 with the 4.7 to play with as well. I love the 4.7 Daks!!!
